It’s not quite the crunchy critter corn on the menu at this year’s Calgary Stampede, but insects are still on the table. Just not in the way most people might think.
Rather than becoming food themselves, some insects could help transform the way food is produced. Researchers from the Haskayne School of Business are exploring how insect farming could play a major role in urban agriculture by converting food waste into valuable resources, creating local protein sources and supporting community-based food production.

As a lifelong learner, Bart Bagrowicz saw the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program at the Haskayne School of Business as a natural fit. Bagrowicz is currently the regional vice president for home financing solutions for B.C. and Yukon at Scotiabank, which has afforded him extensive industry experience. He also holds an MBA, along with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Asian Studies.
Yet Bagrowicz was still looking to build on his academic background and professional experience while connecting theory with practice — leading him to Haskayne's DBA.
“It offers a unique and complementary opportunity for further academic, and importantly, practical application and development,” he says.
What he did not expect was how humbling the experience would be.
“There is always so much more to learn and consider,” he reflects, adding that this perspective has shaped how he approaches his work, pushing him to think more critically and explore ideas more deeply.
His advice for future DBA students corresponds to this mindset: stay open, stay engaged and take time to reflect. Just as important, he says, is to “celebrate successes, even the small wins, along the way.”
Connecting research with real-world practice is at the core of the DBA program at Haskayne. Learn more about the DBA program here: https://bit.ly/4d5A7YM
