BOY-nawp-see
Nuisance, he is being a nuisance
"Comedy is a fantastic tool for bringing people together, for bridging gaps. Historically comedy has also been very effective at poking holes in the powerful and at the same time lifting up, giving voice to the vulnerable. And it's all done through the power of language."
Brent Butt is a beloved Canadian comedian, actor and writer. He is best known for creating and starring in the show Corner Gas which was broadcast in 60 different countries. He's won multiple Canadian Comedy Awards and a Canadian Screen Award. We're so excited to have him as a guest, and we definitely saved a classic Blackfoot word for him!

BWW Season 2 Ep 10 feat Gord Sinclair

"There's more in this country that binds us together than keeps us apart. And that's important to recognize, and the easiest way to do that is by listening and learning. That's why words are so important."
Gord Sinclair is a singer, songwriter and was a member of The Tragically Hip for 35 years. The Hip's influence on our country is nothing sort of legendary. Most importantly, in the last year of The Hip's existence, they dedicated their time to working towards truth and reconciliation. We are grateful that Gord Sinclair is continuing that work through initiatives in the traditional territory of the Tyendinaga Mohawk, and by helping us with the Blackfoot Word of the Week!
One of Chinook's elders chose the word apple because The Tragically Hip album Road Apples was one of your Vice Principal's all time favourites...

Kakato’si
Gaa-GA-dtoo-see
Star (and also puffball mushroom)
"To maintain connection to and stay in touch with one's native language is very very important."
Our guest this week is actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee! You know Paul from his roles on Kim's Convenience, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett! He will also be starring in the upcoming live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender! Since he is an actor from Star Wars, our elder and school grandmother, Blanche Bruised Head taught Paul the word for star. What's interesting is that it's the same word for puffball mushroom, because they look similar!
We love Paul's message about the importance of learning our languages. We were so excited and grateful to have him share such deep insight with our students.

Respect
Our guest this week is 6 time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Famer, Kevin Lowe! The word respect was a great one for Kevin to learn and share with our students. You have to respect what he accomplished with the Oilers. What's more, it's a great word because of the tremendous respect that he has for Indigenous people in Alberta.
Thanks to the Edmonton Oilers for helping to arrange this video for our students!

Fire Burning
Our guests this week are Dillon Dubé and Mackenzie Weegar of the Calgary Flames! Because Blackfoot is largely a verb-based language with lots of action words, oohpokoi, fire burning, was the perfect word for the Flames! Huge thank you to their organization for being so willing to help us out with our language learning initiative! In this video they also speak about their Indigenous celebration night that they held on March 4th! Way to go Flames!
