Better a little bit of outside time in the cold wind than none at all.
It's heckin windy here in Lethbridge today, and it's cool enough to bite at the nose (and any other underdressed bits). The transition to spring sure can be squirrelly: it's hard to predict what outdoor gear your child might need from day to day. I try to keep a supply of a few extra winter coats, mitten and hats, but I can't supply everything. When someone is missing something like boots or a coat size I don't have, we make do with shorter visits to the outdoors.
Making outside time a priority is incredibly important to well-being, and honestly, counters negative behaviors in children especially, but adults as well. Fresh air, open spaces and sunshine (when possible) all contribute to positive energy outlet and mood boosting. 🌫️💨🥶

I seriously love my day home consultant. She's so positive and helpful! Yes, of course she has a job to do in ensuring my space is safe and adherent to licensing requirements, but she makes it so fun and relaxed! The children adore her drop-ins, and for me as a day home operating educator, she gives me so much assurance and confirmation that I'm "doing it right". Thank you, J! I love when the end of visit memo is so simple!

First active ladybug of year! My little buddies are so observant: A found it walking along a path, then M found another! It must be spring because now I've seen both ladybugs AND prairie dogs!

Naps before age four are critical for a child’s brain and nervous system. Missing even one can raise stress levels for hours, triggering meltdowns, clinginess, and panic.
Nighttime sleep alone isn’t enough to erase daytime stress. While the brain is busy consolidating learning and building neural pathways at night, daytime naps provide essential breaks that regulate emotions and reset stress responses. Skipping naps keeps the body locked in fight-or-flight mode, releasing stress hormones that affect both mood and behavior.
These short rest periods are not optional—they’re foundational. Naps help children recover from overstimulation, process experiences, and prepare their nervous system for learning and social interaction. Without them, the body remains in heightened alertness, making emotional regulation more difficult.
Parents can support healthy nap habits by establishing predictable routines, creating quiet and safe sleep environments, and paying attention to age-appropriate sleep needs. Consistency reinforces both brain development and emotional stability.
Understanding the importance of naps reframes them from “optional downtime” to essential brain-building periods. Prioritizing naps helps children manage stress, improve focus, and develop resilience, setting the foundation for long-term emotional and cognitive growth.
