Protecting your family. Empowering your homeschool. Keeping home education legal. But providing individualized education is hard work.

The Partner in Your Success
You teach your children in the safety of your own home because you want what’s best for them—what’s best for your whole family. You don’t have time to be an expert on it all. And you definitely can’t afford to worry about legal matters. HSLDA is Canada’s most trusted homeschool organization. We advocate for homeschool freedom in our country’s courts and legislatures. Ou

Why do families join HSLDA?

For many homeschoolers, it's about having trusted support in an ever-changing legal landscape. As homeschooling regulations evolve, families want confidence that their rights are protected and that they have access to clear, accurate information about their responsibilities.

We're grateful to stand alongside homeschooling families across Canada, providing advocacy, guidance, and support when they need it most.

HSLDA was pleased to attend the TEACH New + Used Curriculum Fair in Jerseyville last week! It was great to connect with homeschooling families as they explored resources and prepared for the upcoming school year. We always enjoy seeing the enthusiasm and excitement that make the homeschool community so special.

Fathers play a powerful role in shaping a child's love of learning. When dads model curiosity, ask thoughtful questions, read, build, explore, and learn alongside their children, they show that learning isn't just something done in school - it's a lifelong pursuit. A father's encouragement, involvement, and example can help children develop confidence, resilience, and a genuine excitement for discovering new things.

Many of you are aware of the comments made yesterday in the Legislature by MLA Hilton MacLennan asking for more oversight of home educators.

This is a good time to make your voice heard. Please contact your local MLA, and also 'cc' your message to the Minister of Education, the Hon. Robin Croucher (also the MLA for District 1, Souris-Elmira).
Here are a few thoughts about what you could include in your message:
• You are concerned about MLA MacLennan's comments.

• Government should not be considering changes to the law unless there is solid evidence presented that such a change is warranted.

• MLA MacLennan does not appear to be properly informed about the state of the law in other provinces. For instance, Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, does not require home educating families to notify at all. Most other provinces are comparable to PEI and require only basic notification or simple annual progress reports.

• MLA MacLennan has it backwards. The assumption of government should be that home educating parents love their children and are giving them the best education possible. Government should only deal with cases of abuse or neglect. To subject all parents to scrutiny because of one or two bad actors is unacceptable.

• To further emphasize the above point, we do not subject all parents to scrutiny over their children's nutrition. Government only intervenes when it becomes clear a child is not being fed properly. Why should education be treated differently?

• Finally, academic research shows that home education delivers strong academic and social outcomes for children, usually superior to those delivered by government schools. (See CCHE.ca/research for various studies.) We're doing well. Rather than imposing burdensome requirements on home educators, we would encourage MLA MacLennan, the Minister, and other MLAs to work to improve the public system.

Ironically, just this Monday I was in Charlottetown speaking to a crowd of 56 home educators about exactly this issue. I didn't expect we'd be facing a challenge quite so quickly!
Sincerely,

Peter Stock
President,

One of the greatest gifts of homeschooling is that it often requires less educational time, leaving more room for reading, exploring, creating, and simply being together as a family.

Less time at a desk doesn’t mean less learning—it often means more intentional learning.

< LESS IS MORE >

One very encouraging article by HSLDA highlights a study that reveals how much more homeschoolers can pack into far less time than traditional schooling.

The standout points from the study conducted by HSLDA's Director of Research, Steven Duvall, PhD, found that homeschoolers have:

📗More efficient learning: Of the 400 minutes in a typical public school day, only 67 minutes, barely more than an hour are spent in meaningful learning activities.

📘 Higher engagement: Homeschool students demonstrated key learning behaviors 2 to 2.5 times more often than public-school students.

📒Less wasted time: Homeschooling eliminates much of the time spent on attendance, transitions, classroom management, and waiting for other students.

Overall, the findings in the Duvall study suggest that, in as little as 2 hours, the average homeschooled student in grades 3 or 4 learn what an average as public-schooled student learns in an entire school day. 🤩

Copy that line into your planner for when doubts about having enough time creep in. Share it as a did-you-know stat with skeptical family members at the next BBQ! Or just enjoy knowing that time is officially on your side with homeschooling. 🏆

In many homeschooling families, dads bring their own unique gifts to the learning journey. Whether it's fixing things, taking risks, solving problems, working with tools, telling stories, building confidence, or teaching life lessons through everyday experiences, fathers have a powerful influence on their children's education.

Sometimes the most important lessons aren't found in a curriculum - they're learned alongside Dad.

We'd love to hear from you! What is something your children's dad teaches that you don't?

After years of helping homeschool families navigate high school, we’ve noticed the same seven challenges homeschool parents have again and again:
-> Misunderstanding credits;
-> Underestimating what counts as learning;
-> Waiting too long to plan;
-> Forgetting to track skills, not just subjects;
->Trying to copy the public school system;
->Ignoring their teen’s strengths and interests;
->Feeling like they need to be an expert in everything.

The good news?

Every single one of these can be overcome — and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

In the upcoming workshop, Homeschooling High School Parent Roadmap,
You’ll get insights on how to avoid these pitfalls and build a high school plan that actually works for your family.
You’ll leave with:
-> a clear roadmap;
-> a plan to create your child's transcript;
-> printable worksheets for your child’s education plan;
-> a list of opportunities for homeschooled teens;
-> and renewed confidence!

Save your spot: hslda.ca/workshop

You can do this! We’re here to help you do it confidently.
