Fulbright alumni are leaders, innovators, and change-makers across sectors. From advancing research to shaping public policy and strengthening communities, their impact extends far beyond their exchange experience.

What makes this network unique is its vastness—artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, and public servants, all connected through a shared commitment to collaboration and understanding.

As we celebrate 80 years, we recognize that Fulbright’s greatest strength is its people—and the ripple effects of their work across Canada, the United States, and beyond.

Congratulations to Fulbright alum Vivian Giang, 2021–2022 Fulbright Canada Student, and recipient of the Fulbright Canada–Maple Leaf Foundation Community Action Program grant.

Her project, ?u?uya awiyabi—the keeping of plants, works with Elders and knowledge keepers from Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation to reconnect youth with the land, traditional plant knowledge, and environmental stewardship. Through community science and cultural learning, the initiative supports the next generation of knowledge keepers while fostering dialogue on conservation and Indigenous-led approaches to caring for the environment.

By creating opportunities for youth to learn directly from community leaders and engage with their physical surroundings, the project strengthens cultural continuity, connection, and shared responsibility for the future.

Fulbright’s impact is not limited to institutions—it extends into communities. Through initiatives like the Fulbright Canada-Maple Leaf Foundation Community Action Program, alums are leading projects that address real-world challenges at the local level.

These efforts reflect the core of Fulbright’s mission: applying knowledge to create meaningful change.

As we celebrate 80 years, we’re proud to highlight the ways Fulbrighters continue to give back—strengthening communities while fostering global understanding.

This month, Fulbright Canada welcomed the 2025–26 cohort of Killam Fellows to Washington, D.C. for the annual Killam Spring Seminar. The seminar provided an opportunity for Fellows from across Canada and the United States to reconnect, reflect on their exchange experiences, and engage in meaningful discussions about leadership, public service, and the future of Canada–U.S. relations.

As one of the program’s signature enrichment experiences, the Spring Seminar encourages participants to broaden their perspectives, strengthen professional networks, and deepen their understanding of the shared opportunities and challenges facing both countries.

We are proud to support the next generation of leaders whose experiences abroad are helping build stronger cross-border connections and lasting impact.

A recent Fulbright alum meet-up in San Antonio demonstrated the power of an engaged alum community. Organized through the efforts of a member of Fulbright Canada’s Alum Advisory Committee, the gathering brought together alums from across Texas to reconnect, exchange ideas, and explore future collaborations.

One exciting discussion focused on a potential U.S.-Canada water management initiative, highlighting how Fulbright connections can spark meaningful cross-border partnerships long after an award ends.

The Alum Advisory Committee plays a key role in strengthening the Fulbright network by engaging and activating alums, supporting fundraising and program recruitment efforts, and helping coordinate events that foster lasting connections and impact.

Congratulations to Dr. Robin McCrary, 2024–2025 Fulbright Canada Scholar from Syracuse University, and recipient of the Fulbright Canada–Maple Leaf Foundation Community Action Program grant.

His project, The Next Rx: Community – A Social Prescribing Portal for Waterloo, supports comprehensive community healthcare by connecting residents with local non-clinical services and supports tailored to their needs. As the first social prescribing initiative in the Waterloo Region, the project addresses barriers such as isolation, loneliness, limited awareness of resources, and difficulty accessing community supports.

By strengthening connections between healthcare practitioners and community organizations, the initiative promotes well-being, accessibility, and more comprehensive approaches to health and community care in Waterloo.
