📢 It's time for the final meeting of the Saskatoon Public Schools' Board of Education for the 2025-26 school year. 📆

The meeting is starting with a presentation on doubleball. SPS just finished hosting its 6th Annual Doubleball Tournament at Wâhkôhtowin School with six elementary schools participating. 🙌

Doubleball is a traditional Indigenous sport played with two small balls connected by a string. Players use curved willow sticks to pass, carry, and score. 🥅 At our schools, we play 5-on-5.

What makes it special? It provides an opportunity for students to engage in physical activity while learning cultural teachings, teamwork, and sportspersonship. 🤝 Participating schools prepare for the tournament by learning the game, practicing its skills, and exploring its cultural significance.

The tournament and its associated learning were initiated by SPS Traditional Knowledge Keeper Tim Eashappie Sr. with the intent of making traditional Indigenous games accessible to all schools across the division. 🙏

Saskatoon Public Schools is hosting a 150th Commemorative Treaty 6 Round Dance for staff and students next week. 🧡 Today, our First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Unit hosted a cultural information session for central office staff. Similar learning is being shared with school staff and students.

These sessions provide an opportunity to learn about the cultural significance, teachings, and protocol of Round Dances in a respectful and welcoming environment. 🫶

Today's session was facilitated by Marc Longjohn, singer and drummer, and Kathy Wahpepah, Traditional Knowledge Keeper. We are grateful for the learning they shared and for the powerful experience we're about to share with our students. 🙏

At our final leadership meeting for 2025-26, our senior leaders - including all school principals - gathered to say farewell to our superannuating (retiring) Director of Education. It was a truly heartfelt moment. ❤️

Can you believe: there are only ELEVEN more days to the finish line for our elementary schools and SIX days of regular classes remaining for our high schools. 🫢

This time of year is so bittersweet for students, staff and families. 🥲

☀️📚 Looking to earn credits, upgrade a mark, complete a prerequisite, or create more flexibility in your schedule? Summer School can help!

For Grade 12 student Kanakpreet, Summer School created space in her timetable for the courses she needed to pursue life sciences at the post-secondary level.

"The Summer School environment is pretty relaxed, the class size is smaller, and, honestly, it's a very worthwhile experience," she says.

Summer School runs July 6–30 at Evan Hardy Collegiate, Monday to Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. It's open to high school students and adults.

Registration is now open! See link in comments.

Earlier this week, our Board of Education recognized Sean Hayes, a former teacher at Evan Hardy Collegiate and current vice principal at Tommy Douglas Collegiate. His courage, selflessness, and humanity reflect the very best of public education and public service.

In September 2024, Sean responded to an unimaginable situation at Evan Hardy. Without hesitation and at great personal risk to himself, he rushed to help a student during a devastating emergency in the school hallway. While the events of that day remain deeply painful for many, Sean's actions reflected extraordinary courage and compassion.

Sean was recently awarded the Carnegie Medal for Heroism by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission—an honour recognizing individuals across Canada and the U.S. who risk their own lives to save others. It is one of the highest civilian honours for bravery.

Sean's actions, and the larger circle of courage and care shown that day, remind us of the compassion, bravery, and humanity that can exist even in the face of tragedy.

📢 The June 2 Board of Education meeting is now underway! We're down to the final stretch of the 2025-26 school year—this is our second-to-last meeting of the year. Our final meeting takes place June 16.

We're kicking things off with a presentation about the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, a globally recognized program that offers academically motivated students a rigorous, inquiry-based learning experience. 🌍✨

We're proud to offer IB for Grades 11 and 12 students at Aden Bowman and Bedford Road. Through the program, students develop strong academic and personal skills including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, organization, research, and problem-solving. 📖🧠🤝

We're pleased to welcome Kim Buglass, IB Coordinator at Bedford Road, and Jeff Spier, IB Coordinator at Aden Bowman, to share information on this special program. They’re joined by IB students who are sharing their own unique experiences. 🎤🎓
