As soccer excitement continues to build across the region — there are local soccer families who have spent years living and breathing this beautiful game.
For Gurinder Badwal, a clinical counsellor at DIVERSEcity and proud mom to Jeevan Badwal, a 20-year-old midfielder with Vancouver Whitecaps FC (), the excitement is personal.
Jeevan’s soccer story began early. At just three years old, he first stepped onto the field at Surrey’s Newton Athletic Park, surrounded by his supportive parents and a strong local soccer community that helped shape his love for the game.

During BC Seniors Week, DIVERSEcity’s TAPS program proudly celebrated seniors and elders with two special events that brought more than 80 participants together for connection, friendship and fun.
On June 1, members of the TAPS Multicultural Group, including First Nations elders, enjoyed a guided SeaBus trip to Lonsdale Quay Market with transportation support. For many participants, it was their first SeaBus experience. Seniors and elders enjoyed exploring the market and spending time together while feeling celebrated and included during BC Seniors Week.
On June 2, South Asian Punjabi- and Hindi-speaking seniors gathered for an outdoor potluck picnic, where they shared food, played games and celebrated together.
Elders from Kekinow Native Housing Society were special guests at both events. Their participation helped foster meaningful intercultural connections and friendships, bringing seniors and elders from different cultural backgrounds together to learn from one another and celebrate as a community.
The events were successfully coordinated by Tarana Kaur, TAPS-Seniors Program Coordinator, with the support of volunteers, creating meaningful opportunities for inclusion, cultural exchange and community engagement.

Yesterday, we explored how AI is becoming part of the modern business toolkit. Entrepreneurs and small business owners joined us for Essential AI Skills for Businesses, a hands-on workshop designed to help participants build confidence using AI tools to support and grow their businesses.
Delivered in partnership with the City of Surrey and supported by BDC, the session highlighted practical ways AI can help streamline tasks, improve productivity and support day-to-day business operations.
Thank you to everyone who attended and took part in the conversation about the future of business and technology.

Twenty-two Grade 7 students recently visited DIVERSEcity to present children in our LINC and SAFE HAVEN programs with handmade toys they created at school.
The visit was a meaningful opportunity for students to share their creativity, spread kindness and connect with members of the community. During their time at DIVERSEcity, they also learned more about our programs and services, gaining a deeper understanding of how we support newcomers, immigrants and diverse communities.
Experiences like these help foster empathy, cultural understanding and a sense of community, reminding us that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting impact.
A special thank you to the students and staff at Surrey Christian School for their generosity and thoughtfulness in creating and donating these handmade toys.
Seniors are leaders, storytellers, caregivers, mentors and an important part of the communities we call home. 💙
This BC Seniors Week, we've celebrated the wisdom, resilience and lived experiences seniors bring to our families and communities every day.
At DIVERSEcity, we’re proud to support seniors through programs and services that help foster connection, wellbeing, independence and belonging — from social activities and wellness supports to community resources and settlement services for newcomer seniors.
Everyone deserves to age with dignity, purpose and community.
