The 6/8 March “All the Blue Bonnets are Over the Border” goes way back in Scottish history. It is a famous Scottish ballad about Bonnie Prince Charlie’s 1745 march into England. Highland dress in those days often included a blue bonnet. As there were many highlanders in the Jacobite army the blue bonnets became associated with them. Sir Walter Scott added words to this ancient air and it was first published in 1820. When I first started playing for highland dancing in my teens this was one of the tunes that the piper needed to know.

When researching this tune I came across a very interesting article on Bagpipe News - https://bagpipe.news/2020/01/24/loudens-bonnie-woods-and-braes/. Have a look if you get a chance. This is the first strathspey I learned in my youth and I still enjoy playing it today. Because of its amazing lift you will often find it being played for dancers doing the Highland Fling, Strathspey and Reel and other dances. It has been widely published, including Scots Guards Volume 1.

"A Man’s a Man for A That" was one of the great and most respected contribution by Scotland’s great poet - Robert Burns. It is a powerful statements about equality and human dignity. It strongly states that a person’s worth comes from their character and itegrity, not their wealth or social status. Robert Burns (1759 - 1796) had a short but very impactful life. He wrote over 550 poems and this is easily one of his most famous. Robert Burns is an inspiration to Scots - a cultural icon and symbol of Scottish identity.

Many pipers and folk groups have performed and recorded this famous piece. "A Man’s a Man For A That" is the traditional tune used to pipe in the haggis at a Burns Dinner.

Dovecote Park is one of the most beautiful and frequently heard 6/8 marches that we have yet little is known of its origin. It was composed by the renowned composer James Braidwood. James Braidwood composed only four tunes but each is superb: Dorrator Bridge (Strathspey), Isle of Carron (Strathspey), Heather Bell (6/8 March) and Dovecote Park (6/8 March). Dovecote Park is a location near Edinburgh where James Braidwood lived. I was first introduced to this beautiful tune when I was 10 years old by my teacher that that time P/M Malcolm Nicholson. I remember not being able to play it very well but sticking with it because of its exceptional melody. Dovecote Park has been described as “a place for ball games, play and a quiet stroll”. The tune has been published in many books but I learned it from Scots Guards, Volume 1.

Hello Pipers

We have just created a new category in Bagpipemusic.com - Kid's Tunes. The Traditionalists out there might think I have lost my mind but here is what happened. At our July/25 summer school, Piping Hot Summer Drummer, we had 4 young girls starting on the practice chanter. One was my 5-year-old grand-daughter. I was trying to show them how much fun piping can be. With the encouragement of my grand-daughter, we named their class the "Baby Shark" class. I taught them how to play "Baby Shark" on the practice chanter. At the Student Ceilidh, the 4 girls wore little "Shark" T-shirts and played their tune brilliantly.

From there, my grand-daughter and daughter-in-law helped me to make the list. I got on a roll and recorded 39 tunes that a child might know and like. These all play very nicely on the pipes.

Here are the 39 Kid's Tunes that I have recorded and are on our site:

Alphabet Song, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Baby Shark, Bye Baby Bunting, Chicken Dance, Cockles and Mussels, Do You Know the Muffin Man, Dolls and Bear Dancing, Down by the Bay, Farmer in the Dell, Five in the Bed, Five Little Monkeys, Green Grass Grew All Around, Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes, Here We Go Looby Lou, Here We Go Round the Mulbery Bush, Hey Di**le Di**le, Hide and Seek, Hokey Pokey, Hot Cross Buns, Humpty Dumpty, Hush Little Baby, If You’re Happy and Your Know it, I’m a Little Teapot, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Jack and Jill Went Up the Hill, Little Jack Horner, Little Miss Muffet, London Bridge is Falling Down, More We Get Together, Mr. Golden Sun, Old Grey Mare, Old MacDonald Had a Farm, Polly Wolly Doodle, Rain Rain Go Away, Row Row Row Your Boat, Sing a Song of Sixpence, Wheels on the Bus, You Are My Sunshine

Hello Pipers

Would you like a FREE Tune “Braes of Killiecrankie"?

The name “Killiecrankie” goes way back in Scottish history. The actual Battle of Killiecrankie occurred in 1689 and was an important part of the Jacobite rebellion. Killicrankie is a narrow, steep mountain pass in Perthshire through which the Killiecrankie river flows. The Braes of Killiecrankie are the sloping hillsides at the site of the 1689 battle. An interesting point for pipers is that one of the most famous people killed in that battle was John Graham of Claverhouse - The Viscount of Dundee.

The first three verses of the folksong “Braes of Killiecrankie” were written by Robert Burns. It tells the story of the battle from the perspective of a veteran soldier. Many singers and folk groups have sung this beautiful song. It plays brilliantly on the bagpipe and is widely played around the world. I remember hearing the Corries perform it many years ago and thought it was incredible both then and now.

Glengarry’s Lament was one of the first piobaireachds I learned and I still think it is terrific. It has a beautiful and reasonably-easy so is widely played around the world. This tune was composed by Archibald Munro in 1828. Fast forward many years: Another setting was presented to Archibald Kenneth and is attributed to P/M Ronald MacKenzie and dated as 1870. Both settings are published in the Piobaireahchd Society Book 16 and I encourage you to get the collection - https://www.piobaireachd.co.uk/shop.

I took an immediate shining to Setting #2. It has just a few notes different but are they ever nice! I am giving away Glengarry’s Lament, Setting #2 this month and I hope you enjoy both settings.
