Horse Behaviour & Safety .ca offers two weeks of engaging material, with a full year of access to learn at a leisurely pace.

Did you know?
Horses have their own personal space, known as a flight zone.

A calm, confident horse will have a smaller flight zone. A nervous or less confident horse will have a larger flight zone—which calls for a different, more cautious approach.

A nervous or irritated horse can move suddenly, and when a 1200-pound animal decides to flee, safety becomes critical.

Young riders and horse enthusiasts can learn how to "speak horse" and respond safely and confidently to body language.

🤓If you were a horse, what breed or type would you be and why?
"A Shetland pony. While often described as gentle and intelligent, they are equally famous for being cheeky, stubborn and highly independent."

🐴If you could ride any horse in history (real or fictional), which one would you choose and why?
"Angus from Brave. In the world of Disney he is the most realistic of all the horses in personality and animation. He is a gentle giant who is always up for an adventure. He is powerful, fiercely loyal and a trusted confidant."

🥰What’s your favorite horse-related memory from the last year and what made it special for you?
"It’s hard to choose just one highlight—my life quite literally revolves around horses. If I had to pick, I’d say the many shows we’ve attended over the past year stand out the most. The Barn Rats youth group, with their mix of unique personalities, has truly come together to make every event not only successful, but genuinely fun and memorable. There is never a dull moment with horses and the Barn Rats."

Common mistakes in large animal rescues include:

-Using a horse’s head or tail as a handle
-Standing in the kick zone or escape path
-Trying to force a frightened horse to move
-Approaching without understanding flight behaviour
