British vs American English: What’s the Difference?

Did you know that British and American English are very similar, but
have some important differences in spelling, vocabulary, and
pronunciation?

For example:
🔹 Colour (UK) / Color (US)
🔹 Favourite (UK) / Favorite (US)
🔹 Flat (UK) / Apartment (US)
🔹 Holiday (UK) / Vacation (US)

At Lumiere Institute, we follow the British system and examinations,
which are based on British English. This helps students become
familiar with the language style used in relevant exams (Cambridge
IGCSE, Anglia) while developing strong communication skills and
confidence in English.

When is the Right Time for a Child to acquire a Second
Language?

Οι εξετάσεις Γαλλικών είναι χωρισμένες σε επίπεδα, σύμφωνα με το Κοινό
Ευρωπαϊκό Πλαίσιο Αναφοράς για τις Γλώσσες (CEFR):A1, A2 (αρχάριοι),
B1, B2 (μέσοι), C1, C2 (προχωρημένοι).

Σε κάθε επίπεδο, οι μαθητές εξετάζονται σε 4 βασικές δεξιότητες:

🔹 Κατανόηση γραπτού λόγου (Reading)

🔹 Κατανόηση προφορικού λόγου (Listening)

🔹 Παραγωγή γραπτού λόγου (Writing)

Οι πιο γνωστές πιστοποιήσεις είναι τα διπλώματα DELF (A1–B2) και

DALF (C1–C2), τα οποία είναι αναγνωρισμένα διεθνώς.

Με σωστή προετοιμασία, οι μαθητές αποκτούν όχι μόνο ένα δίπλωμα,

αλλά και ουσιαστικές γλωσσικές δεξιότητες!

Maria Sophocleous is a dedicated member of our team. She began her
journey of studying English at Lumiere Institute as a student, and today we
are proud she is part of our team!

Maria studied English Language and Literature at the University of Cyprus,
graduating with a Distinction. She also holds an MA in Language Sciences
from the University of Reading, where she specialised in Language
Development and Disorders.

At Lumiere Institute, Maria inspires students through her own journey,
showing them that, with dedication and effort, they can achieve their
goals. She further encourages students to build confidence and develop a
deeper understanding of the language. Her journey is a prime example of
growth, passion, and dedication to learning and teaching!🌟

Did you know?

The English alphabet has just 26 letters… but over 40 different sounds
(phonemes)! This is one of the reasons why letters are often pronounced
differently, e.g. the letter ‘a’ in ‘and’ VS ‘cat’.

English can be tricky, but with practice, you will start to recognize the
patterns! Keep going, you’re improving every day!
