Χτες πραγματοποιήθηκε η πρώτη συνάντηση ερευνητών σχετικά με τη διαμόρφωση του Οδικού Χάρτη Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας (2026-2034) του Διεθνούς Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου για την Περιβαλλοντική και Δημόσια Υγεία.

Το Ινστιτούτο μας τελεί πλέον επίσημα στη Σχολή Επιστημών Υγείας του ΤΕΠΑΚ ως Ερευνητική Μονάδα Δημόσιας Υγείας, όπως έχει πρόσφατα θεσπιστεί από τη Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, και δημοσιεύθηκε στην Επίσημη Εφημερίδα της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας (Κ.Δ.Π. 174/2025).

Ο νέος αυτός οδικός χάρτης έρευνας και καινοτομίας για το Ινστιτούτο μας θα αποτελέσει τη βάση για την αποτελεσματικότερη πρόληψη και αντιμετώπιση των χρόνιων νοσημάτων που ταλανίζουν τον πληθυσμό της Κύπρου.

​Our researchers yesterday gathered to discuss the Strategic Roadmap of the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health (CII) for years 2026–2034.

​Building on our formal integration into the School of Health Sciences at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) as a Research Unit of Public Health, a milestone solidified by the decision by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, as published in the Official Gazette (P.I. 174/2025).

​This new roadmap for our Institute will provide the basis for better preventing and controlling chronic diseases in the Republic of Cyprus and making Cyprus a healthier place for current and future generations to come.

Δίνουμε μεγάλη σημασία στη γνώμη των Γονέων, των οποίων τα παιδιά συμμετέχουν στο CHILDREN_FIRST!

Στο πλαίσιο της ανατροφοδότησης και ενημέρωσης Γονεών για τις δραστηριότητες του Παρατηρητηρίου, είχαμε συνάντηση μαζί τους την περασμένη Τρίτη. Πάνω από 60 Γονείς συμμετείχαν στη συνάντηση, επιδεικνύοντας το εμπρακτο ενδιαφέρον τους για θέματα πρόληψης και υγεία των παιδιών τους, αλλά και ταυτόχρονα όλων των παιδιών της Κύπρου.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης, παρουσιάστηκαν τα πρώτα επιδημιολογικά ευρήματα από τις μέχρι τώρα αξιολογήσεις του Παρατηρητηρίου, ενώ συζητήθηκαν θέματα που σχετίζονται με τη διατροφή των παιδιών, το σχολικό περιβάλλον και τη διάδοση των αποτελεσμάτων προς γονείς και αρμόδιους φορείς.

Ευχαριστούμε θερμά όλους τους Γονείς για την ενεργή συμμετοχή τους, τις εισηγήσεις και τον εποικοδομητικό διάλογο! Η συμβολή τους είναι πολύτιμη για τη συνεχή βελτίωση των δράσεων και των εργαλείων του Παρατηρητηρίου.

We were pleased to hold an online meeting with parents as part of the CHILDRENFIRST Observatory’s activities, providing an opportunity to share updates and exchange views on issues related to children's health and well-being.

During the meeting, participants were informed about the progress of the project and the preliminary findings from so far assessments. Discussions also focused on children's nutrition, the school environment and ways to effectively communicate results and recommendations to families and stakeholders.

We would like to thank all parents for their active participation, valuable feedback, and constructive contributions! Their involvement plays an important role in shaping and improving the Observatory’s work for the benefit of children and their communities.

🌊 Rising Sea Levels: Why Cyprus Should Pay Attention

On the occasion of the World Oceans Day, we are reminded of the importance we shall pay on how global environmental change like sea level rise would affect the environment and health of coastal populations.

As a Mediterranean island and climate change hotspot, Cyprus is particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels, coastal erosion, flooding and saltwater intrusion into freshwater resources. Scientific evidence shows that these impacts can threaten the resilience of coastal communities, ecosystems, infrastructure and public health.

Many of Cyprus' beaches and coastal areas, for example Lady’s Mile, Finikoudes, Mackenzie Beach, Nissi Beach, Fig Tree Bay, Coral Bay, and Governor’s Beach, could face increasing pressure both from sea level rise together with overexploitation of groundwater, leading to salinization of groundwater in costline communities in Cyprus. From erosion and coastal flooding in the coming decades.

At the Precision and Exposomics Health Lab (Clotho) we investigate how environmental changes influence human health throughout life. One of the most significant climate-related challenges facing Cyprus is sea level rise.

Recent research from Clotho Lab, documented with official water data that a gradual increase in drinking water salinity in coastal areas between 2009 and 2020 takes place in Cyprus. That’s a result of how sea level rise, droughts and groundwater pressures may already be affecting freshwater resources. The study showed that sodium concentrations in drinking water increased over time in coastal communities, while no similar increase was observed in inland areas of Cyprus.

Sea level rise is not only an environmental concern. It can affect water security, food systems, infrastructure, mental well-being, and population health. Protecting our coastlines today means protecting the health and well-being of future generations.

🌿 Yesterday was the World Environment Day and at the Precision Exposomics and Health Lab (Clotho) we explore how environmental exposures throughout life influence health and well-being.

Through in public health initiatives such as The Cypriot Children's Health and Environment Observatory, we contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future for all.

The exposome concept helps us understand the impact of our surroundings on health from conception onwards, supporting evidence-based solutions for healthier communities.

No Child is Left Behind: Promoting child well-being and combating child poverty

Το πως μπορεί το Κυπριακό Παρατηρητήριο Υγείας και Περιβάλλοντος Παιδιών να συμβάλει στην αποτελεσματικότερη εφαρμογή των ευρωπαϊκών πολιτικών και σχετικών προγραμμάτων ευημερίας για το παιδί παρουσιάστηκε στο Συνέδριο Υψηλού Επιπέδου "Κανένα Παιδί δεν Μένει Πίσω: Προώθηση της ευημερίας των παιδιών και καταπολέμηση της παιδικής φτώχειας.

Το συνέδριο τελέστηκε στις 20-21 Μαΐου 2026. Ανταλλάχθηκαν ορθές πρακτικές μεταξύ των κρατών μελών, των υπεύθυνων χάραξης πολιτικής και των εμπειρογνωμόνων, ενθαρρύνοντας τον διάλογο σχετικά με αποτελεσματικές προσεγγίσεις για την προώθηση της κοινωνικής ένταξης και την καταπολέμηση της παιδικής φτώχειας.

Η εκδήλωση συντονίστηκε και διοργανώθηκε από το Υφυπουργείο Κοινωνικής Πρόνοιας με εξαιρετική επιτυχία.

How the Cypriot Children's Health and Environment Observatory can contribute to the more effective implementation of European policies and related child well-being programmes was presented at the High-Level Conference “No Child is Left Behind: Promoting child well-being and combating child poverty”.

The conference took place on 20–21 May 2026. Organized by the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare. Taking place back-to-back with the Child Guarantee Coordinators Meeting, the High Level Conference focused on safeguarding the well-being of children across the European Union.

The event provided a platform for an exchange of good practices amongst Member States, policymakers, and experts, fostering dialogue on effective approaches to promoting social inclusion and combating child poverty.

🏫 1ο Επιμορφωτικό Εργαστήριο για Εκπαιδευτικούς Δημοτικής και Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης με θέμα «Το Υγιές Σχολείο: Πρόληψη και Υγεία Παιδιών στο Σχολείο»

Το Διεθνές Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου για την Περιβαλλοντική και Δημόσια Υγεία του ΤΕΠΑΚ μαζί με το Ερευνητικό και Εκπαιδευτικό Ινστιτούτο Υγείας του Παιδιού και το Παιδαγωγικό Ινστιτούτο του Υπουργείου Παιδείας Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας έτρεξαν με επιτυχία το εργαστήριο στις 9 Μαΐου 2026 στο Παιδαγωγικό Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου, στη Λευκωσία.

Εκπαιδευτικοί και φορείς της σχολικής κοινότητας έλαβαν γνώση και συζήτησαν την ανάγκη προώθησης θεμάτων της πρόληψης, υγείας και ευημερίας των παιδιών μέσω του μετασχηματισμού των σχολείων σε Υγιή Σχολεία, όπως προνοεί το στρατηγικό πλαίσιο του Παγκόσμιου Οργανισμού Υγείας και της UNICEF.

🗣 Η συζήτηση εστιάστηκε στην άμεση ανάγκη για:

Ενεργότερη εμπλοκή των οικογενειών, αποτελεσματικότερη εφαρμογή της νομοθεσίας και των πολιτικών για Υγιή Σχολεία.

Σταδιακή, αλλά συστηματική προσπάθεια αλλαγή κουλτούρας για την προαγωγή της υγείας και της ευεξίας στα σχολεία για όλα τα παιδιά, μέσα από συγκεκριμένες δράσεις.

👉 Η εκδήλωση ολοκληρώθηκε με την κοινή διαπίστωση ότι:

Η επένδυση στην υγεία των παιδιών αποτελεί επένδυση για το αειφόρο μέλλον της κυπριακής κοινωνίας.

Η σταδιακή δημιουργία Υγιών Σχολείων απαιτεί τη συστηματική και διαχρονική συνεργασία όλων των εμπλεκόμενων φορέων, χτίζοντας σε δεδομένα από την επιδημιολογική επιτήρηση δεικτών υγείας και περιβάλλοντος των παιδιών στο σχολείο.

Τέτοια στοιχεία για τον Κυπριακό παιδικό πληθυσμό θα τροφοδοτούν την επιλογή κατάλληλων παρεμβάσεων, προγραμμάτων υγείας και ευημερίας, καθώς και σχετικών πολιτικών για το σχολείο με στόχο την περαιτέρω αναβάθμιση των σχολείων σε πιο υγιή και υποστηρικτικά περιβάλλοντα για όλα τα παιδιά της Κύπρου
