Day 12 of the careers. Course was all about creating an exotic floral wall. Followed by an Design excersise to create a group of vases for a spa entrance. Making sure the stems are covered and the vases work as a group and singular. Here the own Vision of the students can surface strongly. This allways a fun day! Love Julia

A garden can be beautiful, but not every beautiful garden is truly designed.
This weekend, I visited the Open Garden Days in Berlin-Rixdorf, where private gardens open their gates to the public for one special weekend each year. Hidden behind historic facades were countless green sanctuaries, each lovingly cared for and full of character.
What fascinated me most was the difference between a garden filled with beautiful plants and a garden guided by a clear design vision. The latter considers colour, texture, seasonality, structure, and the experience it creates for visitors throughout the year.
Perhaps this appreciation comes from my time as a student in Britain, my many visits to English gardens, and growing up with a mother who was a passionate gardener. In the UK, garden design has long been regarded as an art form. Institutions such as the Royal Horticultural Society and events like the Chelsea Flower Show have helped shape a culture where colour palettes, succession planting, and atmosphere are considered as carefully as architecture or interior design.
One garden in particular captivated me: Richardstraße 34. There was an unmistakable sense of intention behind every planting decision. The balance of colour, movement, and structure suggested the hand of a skilled garden designer. It felt both natural and composed—effortless, yet deeply considered.
The visit also reminded me of one of my favourite gardening books, The Gardener’s Palette by Jo Thompson, which beautifully explores the use of colour in the garden.
As a florist and designer, I often see parallels between floral design and garden design. The most memorable creations are never just about flowers. They are about creating atmosphere, emotion, and a sense of place.
Gardens, like floral arrangements, are at their most enchanting when they tell a story.
