Serial Eyes

Serial Eyes is DFFB's premier postgraduate training programme for European television writers. Culturally in Europe, writers tend to work in isolation.

An intensive European 9-month postgraduate course on scriptwriting for serials, based in Berlin and taught in English. Internationally-focused and project-based, the course will be will be structured around three pillars: excellence in serial TV writing courses, experiencing the Writer's Room, and development of an individual project. ses first on serialised TV writing and secondly on the business of making TV drama. It equips the participants with the most advanced writing techniques and they can master the serialised storytelling. They develop a deep understanding of the needs of producers and broadcasters and will be more in sync with the market. The individual project development will enable them to develop their own project with different assignments and regular feedback from a mentor. As they work on their project, they will learn better techniques to pitch it and will have many opportunities to present it to high-level TV professionals. EXPERIENCING THE WRITER'S ROOM (SEPTEMBER-JANUARY)

The key backbone of the program is the Writers' Room in order to equip participants to work as a group and invent a European model of showrunning. Delivering European sophisticated returning TV series requires multiple writers instead of one. It is essential that Serial Eyes train the participants with new working habits and learn to develop a new collaborative mentality. Participants will learn how to cooperate effectively in a group with participants from across Europe, deal with criticism and practice skills e.g. working on someone else’s storyline). Frank Spotnitz will oversee the Writers' Room workshop with writer Ben Harris and producer Jo Strevens. After a introductory week session, in which Frank will explain the writers room process, participants will decide on their own individual project. Participants will gain experience working directly as a team with experienced colleagues, dealing with the authority of a showrunner in the creative process. THE INDIVIDUAL PROJECT: DEVELOP AND PITCH

This course provides a context for each participant to develop their own serial project and complete a pilot. Whatever learning the course stimulates will be immeasurably enhanced by its constant application to each participant’s own project. Each participant needs to have something of their own to show for nine months’ work. The development proposals in the application are therefore significant, and their viability will be a factor in the decision to accept the applicant (or alternatively, to suggest they find another subject to develop). Once the participants have acquired advanced TV writing techniques and have started to experience the working group, they can develop a project of their own. A mentor will follow one project on a one-to-one basis so that each participant gets personalised feedback. The participants will start working on a pitch and a treatment and work closely with their mentor. They will be coached to pitch and will have multiple opportunities to present their project to high-level TV professionals.

On June 10, attendees can meet Maja Costa, Annika Cizek, Helena Hofmann, Will Buckingham, our Head of Studies Katrin Merkel, as well as SE13 alumni Eva Todica, Aditya Khanna and Jonas Davì Moruzzi.

Elena Lyubarskaya will join the programme on June 11.

Serial Producers Workshop 2026 — what a journey! 🚀

We’re looking back on four intense days dedicated to exploring what it truly means to be a producer in today’s TV landscape. Through masterclasses and hands-on workshops, the twelve invited producers challenged their ideas, and gained valuable industry insights.

From creative leadership and guiding a series from development to production, to pitch training, European co-production financing, rights and legal structures, and international sales strategies — we covered every key aspect of the producer’s role.

This marks the culmination of months of intense development and growth - both on a personal and professional level. This week, we had the pleasure of attending in Lille with the Serial Eyes #13 cohort. ✨

The Serial Producers Workshop 2026 is a new intensive program designed for emerging producers, creative executives, and TV professionals working in series across Europe.

Over four days, 10 selected participants will work directly with leading figures in international television, and focus on the skills producers need across the entire TV process, including:

Serial Eyes #13 packed their bags and headed to Brandenburg for a well-deserved writers’ retreat 🌿✨ — stepping away from the pace of Berlin and into a space dedicated to focus, collaboration, and creative depth.

Surrounded by lakes, forests, and wide open skies 🌊🌲, our participants fully immersed themselves in their Industry Projects. Working in small groups, they refined concepts, deepened character arcs, sharpened dramatic structure, and clarified the tone and vision of their stories 🎬🖊️

This retreat is a key milestone in the Serial Eyes journey. Stepping away from daily routines creates the mental space to reset, refocus, and make bold creative decisions 💡🔥 Through honest feedback and collaborative exchange, each project was challenged, strengthened, and pushed to the next level.

And of course, it wasn’t all writers’ room energy — long walks in nature, shared meals, and inspiring conversations helped strengthen the ensemble spirit that defines Serial Eyes 🤝🌅

Autumn 2017 🍂: Luisa Hardenberg submits her application to Serial Eyes.

Today 🎬: She is the creator and head writer of PUSH, and Season 2 is currently shooting. 🚀

A few years can change everything. What starts as a concept on paper 📄✍️ can become a full writers’ room, a set, a cast, a crew — and a series finding its audience. 🎥✨

Serial Eyes supports writers in developing their voice, strengthening their storytelling craft, and thinking internationally 🌍. It’s a space to test ideas, take risks, and shape projects that are ready for the industry.
