Multiple crises in the last 40 years, including the Civil War from 1975 to 1990, the Syrian refugees' crisis in 2011, COVID-19 and the blast in August 2020, severely impacted the overall economic instability and extreme social inequality in Beirut.
United Nations assessment of the damages in destroyed infrastructure and property in 1993 amounted to USD 25 billion. The World Bank reports stated that over 800 000 people were displaced (160 thousand households).
In 2020 the massive blast of non-war character shocked the city. Total damages to the cultural sector are estimated at USD 1-2 billion (Beirut City Profile 2021).
Our case study about Beirut will guide you through the stories of the city reconstruction process and explain the recovery approach and its unique governance model. Download on our site, find link in bio!

Phox Pax wanted to focus on education from the very beginning, even before it got its name and specification. In Feb 2022, a group of enthusiasts started to discuss a future project - we wanted to help young people find their way into urban planning. Like many other people in the world, we were full of expectations. But the next day changed it all.
On February 24th, the world we all used to know ceased to exist. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has brought the war and caused infrastructural & humanitarian crises. We convey our heartfelt admiration for the strength of the Ukrainian people. We wish the nation a triumph in the fight for its independence.
Unfortunately, it is not the first time human settlements have turned into ruins. Although we hope it is the last time it happens with such an unprecedented atrocity. This tragedy compelled us to reconsider our aspirations – it would be immoral if we didn’t. So that is the reason we started Phox Pax.
