BIRTHING POSITIONS & INJURIES
Don't put iatrogen instrumental injuries in the same pot as spontaneous birth injuries!
"Overall, pooled RCT evidence shows no significant difference in perineal tears of any degree or episiotomy between upright and supine/lithotomy positions. Network estimates suggest potential differences between specific positions, but the evidence is limited and heterogeneous. Birthing position should primarily reflect women’s preferences and comfort, while considering other key predictors of perineal trauma (e.g. parity, operative delivery, and episiotomy itself)."
Maternal Positioning in the Second Stage of Labour and its Relationship with Perineal Trauma: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis - International Urogynecology Journal Introduction and Hypothesis Perineal trauma is frequent after childbirth and may be influenced by maternal position. We aimed to synthesize pooled estimates comparing positions in the second stage of labour and their association with perineal tears and episiotomy, using a network meta-a**lysis (NMA)...
We are thrilled to share a workshop at the ICM conference in Lisbon 17 June 2026!
Our workshop title is: “Suturing 1st-degree lacerations after vaginal birth. An interactive workshop introducing a blended learning approach”.
The learning outcomes:
Participants will practice how to suture different types of 1st-degree lacerations according to international standards.
This is what we offer:
We will offer a blended learning scenario. We will set up low-fidelity medical skills training stations for the repair of perineal lacerations.
Free online access to GynZone:
GynZone will be offering free online access to workshop participants after this workshop. Our course on suturing 1st-degree lacerations is available here: https://my.gynzone.com/courses/6-first-degree-lacerations
We hope to see you for our presentation Wednesday 17 June at 14.00 – 15.30 in Room 3E!

VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER OASI
The recommendation regarding the safety of VB following OASI should be individualized.
Women following OASI were evaluated using a noninvasive transperineal-US algorithm.
Using our algorithm yields higher vaginal delivery rates without recurrent OASI.
De novo a**l incontinence symptoms were similar following subsequent VB or CS.
Assessing women following OASI using our innovative non-invasive algorithm is feasible.
The safety of vaginal delivery following obstetric a**l sphincter injury- A retrospective pilot study using transperineal ultrasound algorithm Obstetric a**l sphincter injury (OASI) is a severe complication of vaginal delivery (VD) [1,2], which increases the risk of a**l incontinence [1]. Following OASI, the optimal mode of a subsequent delivery is debated. The risk of recurrent OASI in a succeeding VD is about 7% [2], which could increase...
