12 Sessions, Basics of Photography Course with Aladin Abdel Naby
Whether you are a beginner looking to master your camera or aiming to take your first steps towards a professional path, this course is designed to build your skills from the ground up.
Course Details
Dates: Tuesday 7 July - Thursday 13 August
Time: 2 Hours per session
Location: Photopia, 22 Cleopatra Street, Heliopolis, Cairo
About Aladin Abdel Naby:
Born 1955 in Cairo, I attended and finished primary and secondary schools in English. In 1980, I graduated from the American University in Cairo with a BA in Mass Communication. I picked up photography as a hobby as early as 1964 and taught myself all the skills and arts of the trade. During my teen days I was a musician, but in 1981 I changed career and photography became my profession.
I worked as a commercial photographer from 1981 to 1985, when I accidentally covered the Squash World Championship in Egypt for Reuters News Agency. I signed up with Reuters in June 1986 as a staffer and stayed on till March 2006. During that time, I covered most of the major events in Egypt, all North African countries, assisted in coverage in Europe, Central Africa, Somalia, Chad, Sudan, Jordan, Syria, Yemen, Qatar, Emirates, Iraq (both wars 1991 & 2003 and in between), and Iran.
In May of 2006, I completed the Training of the Trainers (TOT) course in Amsterdam with the World Press Photo Foundation. I taught their programs in the Middle East until 2010 and currently teach photography and photojournalism at the Adham Center and the American University in Cairo.

Is art really the opposite of science? Think again. This talk breaks down the fascinating intersection of neurology, physiology, and creativity. Discover the physical science behind creative blocks, learn how left-brain systems challenge artistic minds, and uncover how understanding human vision can instantly elevate your photography and visual storytelling.
Date: 27 June 2026
Day: Saturday
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Fee: Free Entry
Location: 22 Cleopatra St, El Korba, Heliopolis
Outline of the talk:
Unlearning the Separation of Disciplines. We will explore the misconception that art and science are opposing forces, and how integrating them leads to more profound creative breakthroughs.
Why Creatives Struggle in Traditional Systems. An examination of how left-brain dominant educational models alienate artistic minds, and how we can reclaim our learning processes by understanding neuroplasticity.
Why Ignoring Science Kills Creativity. We will break down the actual neurology and psychology behind “creative blocks,” proving that burnout and lack of inspiration are often scientific problems with scientific solutions (like dopamine regulation, fatigue and cognitive load).
Using Physiology to Master Photography. A deep dive into how understanding human physiology—how our eyes process light, color, and movement, and how our nervous system reacts to visual stimuli—can instantly elevate your photography and visual storytelling.
About Maher Zi Ismail:
Maher Zi Ismail (Zi) is a New York-based Creative Director, cinematographer, and former NASA computer engineer who bridges the gap between science and visual art. Through his production company, Zi combines his academic background in engineering and psychology with cinematic storytelling. He regularly leads workshops and photowalks across the city, has collaborated on events with brands like Sony and OM System, and focuses on how understanding human biology and neuroscience can fundamentally elevate the creative process.

The talk will explore the relationship between photography, perception, and storytelling. How images move beyond simply capturing light to creating meaning, emotion, and lasting impact in our consciousness.
Date: 26 June 2026
Day: Friday
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Fee: Free Entry
Location: 22 Cleopatra St, El Korba, Heliopolis
Outline of the talk:
While the camera records ‘light data’, the brain creates ‘stories’. The difference between an ordinary image and an unforgettable one is that the former stops at the retina, while the latter knows how to follow the path of vision to settle in consciousness. Our journey is in this very short and very deep distance... The distance between the camera lens and the cerebral cortex.
