Our annual Prize Giving is always a special occasion, bringing together pupils, parents and staff to celebrate achievement and reflect on the values that define our school.
In his address, the Headmaster reminded us that excellence remains at the heart of everything we do. Academic excellence opens doors and creates opportunities, but it is built on the qualities we seek to nurture in every pupil: determination, discipline, hard work and a commitment to fulfilling one's potential.
Equally powerful was his reflection on the importance of family. As a family-owned school for almost six decades, Runnymede has been shaped by continuity, trust, personal commitment and a deep sense of responsibility to generations of families. He reminded us that the true strength of a school lies not in buildings, but in its teachers, pupils, families, values and standards.
The Headmaster also spoke passionately about intellectual freedom, encouraging young people to think independently, challenge assumptions respectfully, engage with differing viewpoints and leave Runnymede educated rather than indoctrinated.
We were honoured to welcome Dr Charles Powell as our guest speaker. Drawing on his expertise as a historian and international affairs specialist, he reflected on the enduring importance of the values enshrined in the American Declaration of Independence—liberty, equality, individual rights and democratic accountability—and their relevance in today's world.
He explored the changing international landscape, highlighting the growing importance of cooperation among nations in an increasingly multipolar world, and offered thoughtful insights on the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence. Referencing Pope Leo's reflections in his encyclical letter Magnifica Humanitas, he emphasised that technological progress must always be accompanied by moral responsibility and a commitment to the common good. His message was clear: while AI represents a remarkable human achievement, it must remain a tool that serves humanity, guided by ethics, responsibility and respect for human dignity.
The day was also an opportunity to celebrate another exceptional year of university destinations, with Runnymedians securing places at some of the world's leading institutions, including Oxford, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Imperial, LSE, UCL and St Andrews.
Congratulations to all prize winners and to every pupil whose hard work, character and commitment have contributed to another outstanding year. Thank you to our parents, staff and wider community for the support that makes these achievements possible.

Take a Runnymedian to Work 2026
We are extremely grateful to everyone who made it possible for all our Year 12 pupils to experience such a wide range of inspiring workplaces during this year’s Take a Runnymedian to Work Day—now in its fourth year. Pupils visited diverse environments across sectors including architecture, media and communications, engineering, finance, healthcare and veterinary services, manufacturing, insurance, law, real estate, and travel and tourism.
The day was met with great enthusiasm, with pupils describing their experiences as incredibly insightful, thought-provoking, and inspiring. As they begin to consider future career pathways, the opportunity to step into real workplaces and hear from experienced professionals proved invaluable. Their conversations and feedback afterwards reflected the strong impact of these first-hand experiences.
Some pupils shared their reflections:
“This has been one of the most enriching opportunities I’ve ever had.”
“I came out with a completely different perspective from the one I had going in.”
“I was incredibly moved by how all the nurses, doctors, and technicians worked together as a team, and how they remained so positive despite the intensity of their work.”
Pupils engaged fully throughout the day, asking thoughtful and perceptive questions—something echoed by several host organisations:
“The students were engaged at all times and behaved extremely well, but what impressed us the most was the amount, and more importantly, quality of the questions. I’ve done similar presentations to undergraduate and MBA students and I can honestly say you should be proud of your students.”
The following comment was also so delightful to hear:
“I loved that they came! They were super grateful. The truth is, in your day-to-day you just do your work and it becomes routine, so having someone come in with so much enthusiasm and appreciate everything you do was really rewarding.”
Thank you to the following workplaces for generously giving up your time and opening up your doors to our pupils:

Letter from Headmaster Frank Powell on 2026 university offers:
Dear Parents,
I am writing to share with you an update on the university offers received to date by our pupils applying this year.
The picture is already an exceptionally strong one. Our pupils currently hold offers from many of the leading universities in the United Kingdom, including Oxford, LSE, Imperial, UCL, St Andrews, Durham, Warwick, Bath, Bristol, Edinburgh and King’s, as well as from some of the most selective universities in the United States, including Yale, Columbia, Penn, Brown, Notre Dame,
Stanford, Northwestern and Middlebury.
One figure in particular is worth noting. At the time of writing, our pupils have received 236 offers from nine of the ten British universities currently ranked in the national top ten in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide.
That is not an accident. It is the result, above all, of the quality of teaching at Runnymede and of the school’s long-established ethic and culture of success. Our teachers are outstanding. They know their subjects thoroughly, they know their pupils well, and they work exceptionally hard to prepare them for the demands of the most competitive universities in the world. Year after year, it is
their expertise, commitment and ambition for their pupils that make this level of attainment possible.
Just as important is the culture of the school itself. Runnymede has always been a place where hard work matters, where high standards are normal, and where excellence is expected rather than merely admired. We do not apologise for being demanding. Serious attainment requires serious effort, and a school culture based on discipline, commitment and intellectual ambition is what turns potential into achievement.
Parents play a vital role in sustaining that culture. The values that lead to excellence — hard work, commitment, resilience and, at times, sacrifice — must be reinforced at home as well as at school.
When pupils see that school and home are aligned in expecting the very best from them, they are far more likely to fulfil their potential.
For many years now, Runnymede has produced this kind of outcome with a consistency that, I believe, is unmatched by any school in Spain and very probably by any school in Europe when it comes to sending pupils to the leading universities in the UK and the US. That is something of which we can be proud because it reflects the enduring strength of the teaching, the ethos and the aspirations of this school.
We will, of course, continue to update you as more decisions come in over the weeks ahead.
