DTI Foundation offers international support to develop organ and tissue donation and transplantation.

TPM is a training program that provides a wide range of knowledge and skills to allow participants to act as transplant procurement managers in their own countries. The program is adapted to the circumstances of each participant's country. Additionally, TPM creates and maintains a vast network of qualified professionals throughout the world. This helps to maximize the impact of the work done in each country by connecting transplant professionals to each other.

DTI Foundation launches EU-funded project to build a sustainable organ donation and transplantation system in Guyana | DTI Foundation | Donation & Transplantation Institute 11/06/2026

DTI Foundation has officially launched the EU-funded project “Building a Sustainable Organ Donation and Transplantation Program in Guyana”, a 31-month initiative funded by the European Union under the EU Global Gateway and implemented as part of the Guyana HealthNext: Training, Research and Development programme, coordinated by Expertise France.
Led by DTI Foundation, in close partnership with the Ministry of Health of Guyana, HOATTA, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, GPHC, Instituto de Imunogenética (IGEN), Brazil, and Hospital do Rim, São Paulo, Brazil, the project aims to strengthen Guyana’s national capacity in organ donation and transplantation and respond to the growing burden of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease.
The mission began with a formal kick-off meeting at the Ministry of Health in Georgetown, bringing together national authorities, clinical specialists and international partners to align on the project’s objectives and define a shared strategic direction.
Throughout the week, DTI Foundation’s team of experts worked across three parallel technical workstreams.
The HLA Assessment Team, composed of Eduard Palou, together with Renata Fantini Machado and Gisele Fabianne Rampim from Instituto de Imunogenética (IGEN), Brazil, assessed the national HLA laboratory at NPHRL, reviewing infrastructure, equipment, human resources, training needs and quality systems to define a roadmap towards a fully certified and operational laboratory.
The Nephrology, Donation and Transplantation Team, composed of Brian Álvarez and Pedro Ventura, conducted a clinical needs assessment across GPHC and regional hospitals, engaging with clinical and administrative teams to evaluate the full transplant pathway, from CKD diagnosis and management to living donor programme expansion and readiness for deceased donor kidney transplantation.
The Governance and Regional Coordination Team, composed of Chloë Ballesté and Ola Rudak, held strategic meetings with the Ministry of Health, HOATTA, Expertise France, PAHO, CARICOM and the national communication team to align governance, implementation arrangements and opportunities for regional cooperation across the Caribbean.
The closing session brought together national and international stakeholders, with each expert team presenting the conclusions from its respective technical workstream, covering agreed priorities and next steps across HLA laboratory development, nephrology and transplantation, and governance and regional coordination.
DTI Foundation leaves Georgetown with a solid technical baseline, agreed priorities and a clear implementation roadmap. We look forward to continuing this important work with Guyana’s national authorities, HOATTA, Expertise France and all partners.

📚✨ Learning beyond the classroom.

Today, students from the DTI Master’s Program, in partnership with the University of Barcelona, visited Hospital Clínic Barcelona to gain first-hand exposure to one of Europe’s leading healthcare institutions.

From clinical practice to healthcare organization and transplantation excellence, the visit offered a unique opportunity to see how theory becomes reality.

A big thank you to our DTI team members Maria Barros, Joaquim Albiol, Maite Pujol, and Hector Velasco for accompanying the students and sharing their knowledge throughout the day.

Today, on World Transplant Day, we celebrate the extraordinary gift of life that transplantation makes possible.

Behind every transplant is a powerful story: a donor whose generosity creates hope, a family whose courage transforms loss into legacy, and healthcare professionals whose dedication makes new beginnings possible.

At DTI Foundation, we believe that transplantation is one of humanity’s greatest expressions of solidarity. It reminds us that even in the most difficult moments, compassion can connect lives, cross borders, and build a healthier future for all.

Today, we honor donors, recipients, families, coordinators, and medical teams around the world. Their commitment inspires us to continue working towards stronger donation and transplantation systems, greater equity in access to care, and more lives saved.

Every donor is a hero. Every transplant is a second chance. Every life renewed is a reminder of what we can achieve together.

Happy World Transplant Day. Together, we transform generosity into life.

The Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Health - Guyana yesterday officially launched the project "Building a Sustainable Organ Donation and Transplantation Program in Guyana", a 31-month initiative funded by the European Union under the Guyana HealthNext: Training, Research and Development programme, coordinated by Expertise France.
The kick-off event, hosted at the Ministry of Health in Georgetown, brought together national health authorities, clinical specialists, and international partners to mark the formal start of implementation and chart a shared strategic course for the coming years.
The project is led by the Donation and Transplantation Institute (DTI Foundation) in close partnership with the Guyana Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Agency (HOATTA) and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. It is designed to address the growing burden of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease in Guyana, conditions that currently leave many patients dependent on dialysis with limited access to transplantation.
Over the course of the programme, activities will focus on establishing a fully operational national HLA laboratory, strengthening nephrology and transplant referral pathways, building institutional capacity for deceased organ donation, and supporting the development of a national governance framework aligned with international standards.
"This project represents a transformative opportunity for Guyana's health system," said Dr. Chloë Ballesté, Project Director at DTI.
‘’The initiative of the Ministry of Health will improve the lives of Guyanese and beyond in the Caribbean region; partnering with a world transplant leader as DTI represents a unique opportunity to merge Guyanese and EU global priorities” said Mr. Nadal, First Counsellor and Head of cooperation of the European Union Delegation to Guyana.
The initiative also positions Guyana as a potential regional reference model for organ donation and transplantation in the Caribbean, with planned coordination activities involving PAHO Caribbean, CARICOM: Caribbean Community, and neighbouring countries.
The programme will run through October 2028.

🌳Saps què és exactament un llegat solidari?

Un llegat és una part concreta del teu patrimoni que, a través del testament, destines a una persona o entitat que t’importa.

No cal tenir grans fortunes.
