Eddie Adams, American photographer, was born on this day, June 12th, in 1933 (died Sept 18th 2004)

Adams covered thirteen wars, as well as being famed for his iconic captures of many celebrities.

However it was this image of South Vietnamese General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing Viet Cong officer Nguyen Van Lem that won him a Pulitzer Prize, and that he is best remembered for.

Adams later said that he believed he was watching the interrogation of a captured prisoner, and that it was only as he framed the image in his camera's viewfinder that General Loan raised his gun and fired.

Adams later went on to say:

"Two people’s lives were destroyed that day. The general’s life was destroyed as well as the life of the Viet Cong. I don’t want to destroy anyone’s life. That’s not my job."

Whatever the actual events it became an iconic image that changed the way many people around the planet viewed the ongoing conflict in Vietnam.
