How do you say “Look” in Spanish?
For example, “Look mum, there’s a hole in my jumper!”
This question is great because it really gets to the root of fluent use of language. We all know that the word look is mirar. But in English, we don’t always use this word in a literal sense. It has made its way into colloquial use as an expressive word we use to draw someone’s attention to something.
In the sentence above, “Look mum, there’s a hole in my jumper!” we do not use the word look because we want the person to physically look at something. We want their attention. We want to give emphasis to what follows. We could easily interchange the word look with the words hey or listen.
So how do you translate this into Spanish?
The answer to this is surprisingly easy. We would use the same word mirar but in the imperative form. ¡Mira mami, tengo un agujero en mi jersey! Look mum, there’s a hole in my jumper!
Sometimes it is easy to overthink things in translation. It’s hard to believe that such informal uses of a verb can translate so coherently!
Using mira in this way will give you a whole new level of fluency in your conversational Spanish.
