In this performance, Dowland’s song Now, O now I needs must part is combined with its instrumental variation, The Frog Galliard. Nobody is entirely sure how the galliard earned its peculiar title — it may refer to the Duc d’Alençon, known as Queen Elizabeth I’s “frog.” The melody became widely known across Europe and was arranged for cittern, virginal, consort, and voice.Dowland himself reused it in The First Booke of Songes (1597), but it’s still unclear which version came first. ▶️ Watch the full video here: https://youtu.be/EgsEKLe_FAg?si=WAxyyH62j2kYQOQM ✨ Thank you for listening — and if you enjoy it, feel free to subscribe, like and share!
One of the earliest English sonatas — written in Spain by Henry Butler (Enrique Botelero), a viol player in the Capilla Real of Philip IV. This virtuosic, lively piece blends English, Spanish and Italian influences.

This broken consort arrangement of Dowland's Lady Rich, Her Galliard for lute, is a fantastic example of the ornamentations of the English Renaissance, diminutions or in this case rather variations. Dowland writes the original melody followed by the ornamented version of it for each strophe. It shows the intricate ornamentations and the rich sound of his music.
