Centro de Investigación en Química - Chemistry Research Center

CiQUS was formally created on February 10th 2010 by the Governing Council of the University of Santiago de Compostela and started its activity in February 2011. CiQUS was the first member of a network of singular research centers with a new model of scientific organization, which constitutes one of the R&D strategic axes of the CAMPUS VIDA project (Campus of International Excellence, MEC-MICINN, 2

🎉 Congratulations to Prof. Helma Wennemers on being awarded the 2026 Emil Fischer Medal for her outstanding contributions to synthetic peptide research.

We are proud to have Prof. Wennemers as a member of the CiQUS External Scientific Advisory Board. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

More than a century ago, Emil Fischer gave a name to a new kind of molecule and, with it, founded a field. He called it the peptide.

The German Chemical Society (GDCh) has awarded the Emil Fischer Medal since 1912 for outstanding work in organic chemistry, and this year it returns to the very science Fischer helped launch. The 2026 medal goes to Helma Wennemers of ETH Zürich for her research on synthetic peptides.

Wennemers has shown that short chains of amino acids can do what nature usually reserves for far larger molecules. Her tripeptides act as asymmetric catalysts. Her synthetic collagen probes reveal tissue remodeling in tumors and scars. Small molecules, outsized reach.

In the medal's 114-year history, she is the first woman to receive it.

"It is a great honor to receive the Emil Fischer Medal, named after the father of peptide chemistry," Wennemers said.

We could not agree more. The American Peptide Society honored Helma with our Vincent du Vigneaud Award in 2023, and we send our warmest congratulations on this newest and richly deserved recognition.
