The Minister for Education, Honourable Aseri Radrodro, in consultation with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) and the Fiji Meteorological Service, has been closely monitoring the evolving weather situation across the country.

While earlier assessments indicated that schools could operate as normal, the latest weather forecasts and reports recently received point to a significant deterioration in conditions overnight. Persistent heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal inundation, and flooding continue to affect many parts of Fiji, with several flood-prone areas already impacted and further flooding expected this morning.

With the safety and wellbeing of students, teachers, and school communities as the Ministry's highest priority, all schools throughout Fiji will be closed today, Tuesday 16 June. Tertiary institutions are encouraged to make their own decisions based on the situation.

The Education Minister said that this precautionary decision has been made to minimise unnecessary travel and reduce the risk to students, teachers, and families as weather conditions remain unpredictable. He strongly urges parents and guardians to keep children safely at home and not to attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, creeks, or rivers, or travel through affected areas.

Heads of Schools are requested to remain in close communication with their School Management Committees and District Education Offices, continue monitoring local conditions, and report any weather-related impacts to school facilities through the appropriate channels.

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the NDRMO, the Fiji Meteorological Service, and other relevant authorities, will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates as conditions evolve. Further advice on the reopening of schools will be issued when it is safe to do so.

Hon. Radrodro thanked parents, guardians, school leaders, teachers, students, and the wider public for their understanding, cooperation, and continued support, emphasizing that the the decision was made with the safety and the wellbeing of Fiji’s children and school communities as the highest priority.

𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐄𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐀𝐃𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐅𝐈𝐉𝐈

The Minister for Education, Honourable Aseri Radrodro, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and relevant divisional authorities, advises that based on the latest assessments, the overall weather situation across Fiji remains stable and schools will operate as normal tomorrow.

Parents and guardians may use their discretion when deciding whether to send their children to school, particularly in areas where weather conditions or travel routes may deteriorate overnight.

While the country continues to experience periods of heavy rainfall, strong winds in some areas, rough sea conditions, and unusually cold temperatures, consultations with the NDMO and divisional authorities have confirmed that there have been no reports of major flooding or significant disruptions affecting schools or surrounding communities.

Although isolated cases of coastal flooding and rough sea conditions have been observed in parts of the Yasawa Group and the Eastern Division, these have not impacted critical infrastructure, school operations, or public access.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure that their children should not attempt to cross flooded roads, creeks, or rivers, to exercise caution when travelling, and to continue monitoring official weather updates and advisories.

For those students attending school, you are encouraged to wear warm clothing and bring an umbrella, as cold and wet weather conditions persist across the country.

Heads of Schools are advised to remain in close communication with their Management Committees and District Education Offices and to continue monitoring local conditions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.

The safety and welfare of students, teachers, and families remain our highest priority.

The Ministry will continue to closely monitor the situation in consultation with the NDMO and relevant authorities and will provide further updates should conditions change.

The Permanent Secretary for Education, Mr. Navin Raj refutes the unsubstantiated claims circulating on the media with regards to the content on school operations and the implementation of an internal administrative circular.

Mr. Raj wishes to assure students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders that Term 3 will proceed as scheduled in the 2026 Academic Calendar and will commence on 7 September 2026 and conclude on 4 December 2026. There has been no change to the academic programme or the scheduled school calendar.

With light to the completion of all work coverage in Term 2, Mr. Raj stated that this has been an ongoing practice for years and Term 3 is mostly used by teachers to conduct Trial examination, intensive remedial, revision, and preparation prior to students sitting for the Y8, Y12 and Y13 external examinations.

“I wish to reiterate that since 2024, the Fiji Year 8 Examination has been scheduled in September which is Term 3 and the results are released in November of the same academic year. This process enables secondary schools to enrol students into Year 9 based on the official FY8E national results, rather than internal school-based annual examination marks,” said Mr. Raj.

Mr. Raj further reaffirmed that schools throughout Fiji will continue to operate as normal, with all students expected to attend classes physically during Term 3 in accordance with established academic arrangements. Teaching and learning activities will proceed uninterrupted, reflecting the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to delivering quality education for every child.

The Permanent Secretary also addressed concerns regarding the “Student Home Life” data field in the Fiji Education Management Information System (FEMIS), clarifying that it is a standard component of student records used to support informed planning and student welfare.

“The ‘Student Home Life’ component is designed to capture relevant background information that strengthens the Ministry’s capacity for planning, monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making. This includes supporting student welfare, guiding policy development, improving resource allocation, and enabling targeted interventions where necessary,” he stated.

The Heads of Schools are expected to ensure that all student data, including this information, is accurately maintained and regularly updated within the FEMIS platform in accordance with established administrative requirements.

Mr. Raj also wishes to reassure all external examination candidates that the Year 8, Year 12, and Year 13 national external examinations will proceed as scheduled in Term 3. “There are no changes to the approved assessment calendar, and all examination processes will continue in accordance with established procedures and timelines”.

Teachers are expected to continue delivering subject content in line with the Learning and Teaching Plan (LTP), while Heads of Departments, Vice Principals, Assistant Head Teachers and Heads of Schools are reminded to remain vigilant in monitoring effective curriculum implementation.

Mr. Raj further emphasises that Term 3 is a critical period not only for external examinations, but also for the conduct of continuous assessments for Years 1 - 3, annual examinations across Years 4 –7 and Years 9–11. He noted that this term also supports the continued delivery of pastoral care programmes and lifelong skills activities, which are essential to the holistic development of students.

Mr. Raj also highlighted that Year 10 students will have the opportunity to participate in organised career expos during this period. These expos are designed to provide guidance and support, enabling students to make informed decisions about their subject pathways as they prepare to transition into Year 11. Heads of Schools are also reminded of their responsibility to ensure that extra-curricular engagements complement, rather than overshadow, the core focus of education, effective teaching, and meaningful student learning.

Addressing the circular referenced in the media reports, Mr. Raj states that it is an internal administrative communication issued to Heads of Schools and relevant Ministry personnel. The circular is administrative in nature and should not be interpreted as introducing changes to the academic calendar, student attendance requirements, the delivery of teaching and learning, or the conduct of national examinations. It does not alter existing educational programmes or normal school operations.

The Permanent Secretary for Education urges all stakeholders to rely only on official communications from the Ministry of Education for accurate and verified information.
“We encourage the public to avoid speculation and misinformation that may cause unnecessary concern. Official Ministry channels remain the most reliable source of information.”
