𝐌𝐎𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋 𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐃𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐅𝐈𝐉𝐈

The Minister for Education, Honourable Aseri Radrodro, in consultation with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) and the Fiji Meteorological Service, has been closely monitoring the evolving weather situation across the country.

While earlier assessments indicated that schools could operate as normal, the latest weather forecasts and reports recently received point to a significant deterioration in conditions overnight. Persistent heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal inundation, and flooding continue to affect many parts of Fiji, with several flood-prone areas already impacted and further flooding expected this morning.

With the safety and wellbeing of students, teachers, and school communities as the Ministry's highest priority, all schools throughout Fiji will be closed today, Tuesday 16 June. Tertiary institutions are encouraged to make their own decisions based on the situation.

The Education Minister said that this precautionary decision has been made to minimise unnecessary travel and reduce the risk to students, teachers, and families as weather conditions remain unpredictable. He strongly urges parents and guardians to keep children safely at home and not to attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, creeks, or rivers, or travel through affected areas.

Heads of Schools are requested to remain in close communication with their School Management Committees and District Education Offices, continue monitoring local conditions, and report any weather-related impacts to school facilities through the appropriate channels.

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the NDRMO, the Fiji Meteorological Service, and other relevant authorities, will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates as conditions evolve. Further advice on the reopening of schools will be issued when it is safe to do so.

Hon. Radrodro thanked parents, guardians, school leaders, teachers, students, and the wider public for their understanding, cooperation, and continued support, emphasizing that the the decision was made with the safety and the wellbeing of Fiji’s children and school communities as the highest priority.

As part of the lead-up to the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Church College Fiji, our Tuesday devotionals have featured distinguished alumni who have returned to share their experiences, testimonies, and lessons learned during their time at the school.

The series commenced with Sister Tulia, the school's first Head Girl, and Brother Vodo Tamanalevu, representing the Class of 1997. They reflected on the early years of the school and shared how faith in Jesus Christ, education, and service have influenced their lives and careers.

On Tuesday, 9 June, the devotional program was divided between junior and senior students. Our junior students were inspired by Nina Naceba (Head Girl, 2000) and Eileen Swann (Class of 2009), while our senior students heard from Timoci Kean (Class of 2015) and Grace Taito Tora (Class of 2010).

Through their stories, our alumni emphasized the importance of discipleship, education, leadership, and perseverance. These special devotionals continue to connect our students with the rich legacy of Church College Fiji as we prepare to celebrate 50 years of faith, learning, and excellence and being disciples of Jesus Christ.

A solemn silence enveloped Church College Fiji as pallbearers carried the casket of Sis Yaco Qolibalavu Cama through the school halls one last time.

Each pallbearer strode in step to the slow resonant beat of the lali as students lined in a guard of Honour, a tradition symbolic of the deep respect accorded to those whose lives touched many others.

Sis Cama had been a faculty member for six years and up until her untimely passing had served as the Head of Department for Mathematics, Commerce and Computer Studies.

With a wealth of experience under her belt from a teaching career spanning almost two decades, Sis Cama kept studying to refine her craft, earning herself a postgraduate diploma in mathematics from the University of the South Pacific and had vocally expressed her intentions to gain her Masters Degree.

Outside her career progression and academic feats, she was resilient - a skill she developed at a very young age. As shared by her fellow faculty member, Sis Oere Aroea in her eulogy, Sis Cama had been diagnosed with a brain tumor as a child. Her surgery, although successful left her unable to speak or walk. While she underwent gait training and relearned how to speak, her challenges were compounded by a further diagnosis of dyslexia and indifferent teachers who felt her disability would impact test results expressing that she not sit the national exams while at primary school.

Determined to prove her teacher wrong Sis Cama put in the work and passed her exams, proving that one should not be defined by their disability.

“She wanted to prove to her teacher—andmore importantly, to herself—that she could do it. That moment helped shape her career. Those experiences did not weaken her—they gave her purpose. As a young girl, Yaco made a powerful promise—that one day she would become a teacher who would never leave any child behind. And she kept that promise,” Sis Aroea said.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Church College Fiji principal Sis Cheryl Bhan.

“As head of department, she proved herself to be nothing short of a miracle worker. Where others saw difficulty, she saw opportunity. Where students feared math, she instilled confidence. She made our students love math. This is a rare gift and one that will remain a lasting part of her legacy within this school, she said.

Sis Cama is survived her husband, two children, father, grandfather and five siblings.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague and teacher, Sis Yaco Qolibalavu Cama

Sis Cama was the Head of Mathematics and a valued member of our school community. Her dedication, kindness, and commitment to education touched the lives of countless students, staff, and families. Her passion for teaching and unwavering support for others will always be remembered and greatly missed.

On behalf of the school administration, teachers, students, and the wider school community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, and friends during this difficult time.

In our sorrow, we find comfort in the gospel of Jesus Christ. President Dallin H. Oaks taught that "Death is but an inevitable step in moving from one place to another in the wondrous unending journey prescribed by God our Eternal Father and made possible by the Atonement of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. The resurrection from death through Christ is real and certain. What a significant assurance. What a glorious reality.”

Volleyball Competition Postponed

Yesterday, 29 April 2026, students attended a final devotional for the end of term one, followed by an assembly where medals from the Suva Zone Competition were presented.

We also acknowledged the students who departed this morning to participate in the 2026 Fiji Finals.

Church Schools Strategic Priority 3 - Recruit and Develop Qualified Teachers

Church College would like to congratulate Sis Yaco Cama on her graduation from USP today. She graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Science Mathematics. Sis Cama also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Physics, a Diploma in Tertiary Teaching and an ITEP teaching certificate.

Church College will reopen tomorrow (Friday) for normal classes. Students are advised that period 6 tomorrow will be block A.

PUBLIC ADVISORY - SCHOOL OPERATIONS UPDATE

The Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro wishes to inform all parents, guardians, students, and school management that all schools in the Central and Eastern Divisions will reopen tomorrow, Friday 10 April, while schools in the Western Division will remain closed.

The Minister advises that all schools to be in full and normal operation by Monday 13th April. All schools in the Northern Division are to continue operating as normal.

This decision is based on the latest situational reports and in consultation with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO). Current assessments indicate that several evacuation centres remain active in the Western Division, including three in Ba and Tavua, eleven schools being used as evacuation centres across Lautoka, Nadi, and Yasawa, six in Ra, and one in Nadroga/Navosa.

In addition, many affected areas in the Western Division continue to experience power and water disruptions, and some access routes remain unsafe. The Ministry also notes that many students travel significant distances to school, which may pose further risks under the current conditions. Given these ongoing challenges, the safety of all students remains the highest priority.

Parents and guardians are strongly advised to keep children at home where schools remain closed, to ensure that children do not attempt to cross flooded areas under any circumstances, and to encourage children to engage in home-based learning activities such as reading and revision during this period. All Heads of schools are to provide regular updates and liaise with their Divisional Education Offices on their teachers and learning activities.

The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
