As a Filipino migrant in France, I co-celebrate the 125th Philippine Independence Day with the Philippine community in the south of France. This event is a yearly reminder of how the Philippines has gained independence from more than 300 years of being a colony of Spain. Now, Philippines and Spain share a friendship as independent nations. Happy Independence Day, Pilipinas!

Cet événement rappelle chaque année que les Philippines ont acquis leur indépendance après avoir été une colonie espagnole pendant plus de 300 ans. Je veux juste partager avec vous de merveilleuses nouvelles du Centre Socio Culturel où j'enseigne l'anglais tous les mercredis matins :

Cette année nous fêtons les 30 ans de ce festival du Jeu
Sur 1.000m2 d’exposition, les visiteurs seront accueillis par des animateurs tous bénévoles dans un climat à la fois calme et empressé pour découvrir le plus possible de jeux et d’activités !
Depuis 30 ans, nous partageons des valeurs telles que le plaisir de la découverte, le rire, l’esprit d’équipe, la bienveillance, la culture avec les jeux du monde, mais aussi l’espièglerie, l’humour, un peu de triche parfois…, la stratégie, l’habileté, la curiosité, la concentration.

Enfin, pépite de l’année : nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir une Association spécialisée dans l'adaptation des jeux de société.
Ainsi les personnes valides pourront jouer avec des personnes en situations de handicaps.

In celebration of Buwan ng Wika, the DFA-Office of Public and Cultural Diplomacy (OPCD) in partnership with UNACOM will be holding an online forum entitled “More than 100 Ways to Say…”: An Online Forum on the Status of Philippine Indigenous Languages on 31 August 2022, Wednesday, at 3:00 PM (PHST) via Zoom, and to be livestreamed on the DFA’s official YouTube channel, and page.

Let us learn about the state of and challenges faced in the preservation of the indigenous languages of the Philippines. Let’s help protect our cultural identity by saving our indigenous languages from extinction.

Sa pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika, ang DFA Office of Public and Cultural Diplomacy (OPCD) sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa UNACOM ay magtatanghal ng online na pagpupulong na pinamagatang “More than 100 Ways to Say…”: An Online Forum on the Status of Philippine Indigenous Languages sa ika-31 ng Agosto 2022, Miyerkules, alas tres ng hapon (PhST) sa pamamagitan ng Zoom, at ipapalabas sa opisyal na Youtube Channel at Facebook ng DFA.

Makilahok at alamin natin ang kalagayan at mga pagsubok sa pagpapanatili ng mga katutubong wika ng Pilipinas. Tulungan natin na protektahan ang ating kultural na pagkakakilanlan sa pamamagitan ng pagsalba sa ating mga katutubong wika.

Educator bloggers Lindsey Oh and Ray Rozycki wrote, "Curriculum is not a textbook, nor the materials, videos, and worksheets that help us instruct students. Students are expected to learn the knowledge and skills as they progress through our school system. " (Rozycki, 2017). This definition has struck a chord in me as I always try to improve the curriculum I provide for my students. Still, I also follow established curricula from the schools that I am affiliated with.

As an independent freelance English teacher, I create my curriculum based on the instructional materials I have deemed necessary in my students' learning development based on their particular needs. Nevertheless, as the authors have emphasized, it is not the materials but the expected learning competencies (the knowledge and the skills) that the students must learn that determine a curriculum. These expected abilities are the ones that would help guide us in choosing the materials as well as the different experiences and integrated connections within. To determine the best syllabus for a specific group or individual client, I would usually have an initial 30-minute discussion and a written pre-test with my individual private students. This initial contact would help me gauge their current level of learning, and from there on, I would create a curriculum that would fit their learning needs. The curriculum would then guide me on which materials and activities would best suit the lessons to help the students reach their learning goals and progress.
