My love letter to anyone suffering from audition burnout:

Hi friend! You are brave and you’re awesome.
Here are some thoughts & ideas below.

Couple things :
+ What you’re feeling is normal. You’re putting a ton of effort, energy, and resources into something that can be very opaque and a system that can be pretty soul-sucking.
+ Breaks are super important. But strategic breaks are better. Knowing the phases of performance preparation, your own energy cycles/recovery times, & your nervous system archetype are essential.
+ Burnout is a real psychological injury. Think of it like a stress fracture or a ligament tear. It needs real, specific treatment.

Some ideas:
+ look at your audition strategic plan. Do an audit of what’s working & not working - in your playing, mindset, preparation, and life.
+ Map and plan your schedule into the phases of performance preparation WITH your energy cycles (the last phase is recovery & re-inspiration, so get ready to plan some time off!)
++ Learning how to practice intentionally, efficiently, & strategically is going to make a huge difference for you. I can help there, and Molly Gebrian’s book is good too. (She and | did a co-conference called “how to practice” with both of our magic - I can send the recoding if you want).
+ when I was studying with Kawasaki at CCM and was nearing burnout he called me on the phone and told me to sleep as much as possible instead of practicing. It’s ok to recover. Taking time and prioritising rest & recovery is not the same as giving up. Also - just because you rest & recover doesn’t mean you’ll get worse or give up - in elite sports training (I went to CCM on a full rowing scholarship), we know that strategic rest is how to get BETTER.

I’m happy to have an individual session to get through as much of this as we can and get a plan that actually supports you. This is a really brave thing to put out there and I want to absolutely encourage you with real tools & research. Send me a DM & we’ll set it up.

A / Attunement / What moment sticks out to you when you felt like you were sublimely in tune with everything around you? That magical feeling of being in the right place with pitch/balance in the harmony, and phrasing direction? The sweet spot! 🍬
R / Rhythm / What’s a moment where you really enjoyed and felt like you were fully a part of the groove? 😘
K / Kinetic Integration / think of a moment where everything felt in flow - where everything is fluid, coordinated, lucid, and connected - like you’re part of something bigger and you feel perfectly aligned 🤩

SPARK Practice : Une méthode innovante pour les musiciens

SPARK Practice est un programme international de développement musical créé par Sarah Niblack, musicienne, pédagogue et coach spécialisée dans la préparation mentale et la performance. Forte de plus de vingt années d’expérience dans l’enseignement, la pratique instrumentale et l’accompagnement d’artistes, elle a développé une méthode structurée qui s’appuie sur les neurosciences, l’entraînement mental, les techniques issues du sport de haut niveau et les principes de la pleine conscience.
