📢 Two New UNIgreen Articles Available
In recent weeks, UNIgreen has continued to strengthen both scientific collaboration and cooperation across the European Universities initiative.
From 11–15 May 2026, Unimore - Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia hosted the JRC7 Scientific Mission on Plant Breeding, bringing together researchers and PhD students from across the Alliance to explore innovative strategies for crop resilience and multi-stress adaptation.
UNIgreen also participated in the FOREU4ALL Workshop 3 at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where representatives from more than 65 European University Alliances exchanged ideas on engagement, inclusion, and fostering a stronger sense of belonging within their communities.

🌿 This year, instead of touring our campuses, UNIgreen is highlighting the projects and initiatives that bring our Alliance to life.
We continue our series with the Unimore - Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia and the ALGENFOR project, an initiative exploring innovative and sustainable solutions for the future of food.
🔬 From microalgae-enriched bakery products to circular economy approaches that reduce waste and improve resource efficiency, the project demonstrates how research can contribute to more sustainable food systems.
🤝 Bringing together researchers, PhD candidates, and students, ALGENFOR also fosters collaboration and innovation across generations of food scientists.

🌿 People behind UNIgreen – Meet Paula Ferreira
💼 Paula Ferreira is a researcher in biomaterials at Politécnico de Coimbra - IPC, working on the development of sustainable materials for biomedical applications. Alongside her academic work, she is also a co-founder of two start-ups focused on reducing waste, solvents, and packaging through sustainability driven innovation.
🌍 Within UNIgreen, she contributes to initiatives that connect science, sustainability, innovation, and knowledge transfer helping turn individual research efforts into collective impact across Europe.
🤝 She highlights how the alliance fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and encourages researchers to look beyond their local context to address broader societal challenges.

🌿 UNIgreen Appoints New General Coordinator to Lead the Alliance’s Next Phase!
We are pleased to introduce Prof. José Luis Ruiz Real, Rector’s Delegate for the UNIgreen European University at Universidad de Almería, General Coordinator of UNIgreen: The Green European University, and Chair of the UNIgreen Board of Directors.
🌍 In his vision for the Alliance, Prof. Ruiz-Real highlights the importance of building bridges between countries, disciplines, education, research, innovation, and society to create a stronger and more sustainable European Higher Education Area.
🤝 His priorities include strengthening the sense of belonging across the Alliance, increasing the impact of UNIgreen on students, researchers, and staff, and consolidating UNIgreen as a European reference in sustainability and green transition.
