Hill View Primary School Marks Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday with Trees for the Future

Hill View Primary School has been celebrating a truly remarkable milestone this week as the nation honours the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough. The much‑loved broadcaster, natural historian and environmental campaigner has inspired generations to care for the natural world, and pupils, staff and families at Hill View have been delighted to mark the occasion in a way that reflects his lifelong message of protecting the planet.

The celebrations have focused on one powerful and practical symbol of hope: trees. Throughout his career, Sir David Attenborough has repeatedly highlighted the crucial role trees play in tackling climate change, supporting wildlife and improving wellbeing. Inspired by this message, Hill View Primary School has turned his centenary into a lasting environmental legacy.

As part of the celebrations, every family at the school has been given a young tree to plant at home in their garden. These trees are intended to grow alongside the children themselves, serving as a living reminder of responsibility, care and connection to nature. Families have been encouraged to make tree‑planting a shared moment, talking about why trees matter and how small actions at home can contribute to a healthier planet.

Alongside this community initiative, today the school has planted 20 new trees in its own grounds – one for each class. Pupils from across the school took part in the planting, learning first‑hand about how trees support birds, insects and other wildlife, while also absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. The activity has brought lessons from the classroom to life, linking science, geography and citizenship in a way that pupils will remember for years to come.

Neurodivergent children are often early adopters of technology, making supported online experiences especially important.

Our latest guide helps parents and educators understand how to create safe, positive digital environments.

It explores key considerations, including:
• Modelling responsible online behaviour
• Setting age-appropriate boundaries
• Encouraging open and supportive conversations
• Understanding emerging risks such as AI-generated content

The guide also highlights the importance of balancing screen time with offline activities to support wellbeing and development.

It's been another exciting week of post for our Year Six pupils. In response to our letters to people in positions of power lobbying for change around environmental issues, we have received letters from Downing Street and Buckingham Palace!

It has inspired our pupils to continue to learn about issues they feel passionately about and let their voices be heard.
