Hello pattern cutters/upcyclers/refashioners, or even those just budding or aspiring to that....

Winter is nearly upon us, and so what we wear becomes more important. Layers, warmer, thicker fabrics etc.... what we have in the cupboard, wardrobe or drawers, and what we can make from what we already have. Trying not to keep buying 'new' is the really important thing now to save the earth's resources.

I have always naturally done that - I once made a pair of moccasin slipper/boots from an old sheepskin jacket someone gave me! I hated the jacket but loved the boots. I wore them until they had holes underneath...

I teach pattern cutting/ refashioning/designing/sewing and have done for about 25 years now, in colleges, universities, on BA and MA courses at Birmingham City University, University of Northampton, Ravensbourne University, and De Montfort University.

Hi again folks! In England, the weather is still very chilly, so unfortunately the winter togs can't be put away just yet, but..... If you don't want to buy yet more stuff, especially if it's winter orientated, (a heatwave will be on us the minute you do, and we have to resist the urge to keep buying) you could have a go at re-fashioning clothing you already have, OR start making a pattern for your dream dress/outfit for when warmer weather finally arrives.

I just bought an expensive cardigan from Smedleys in their sale and am now feeling very guilty. It’s very beautiful both in quality, colour and making, and I consider it’s worth the money but not worth the historical horror of slavery that originally brought Sea Island cotton to the UK.
I bought the cotton version as the merino wool one I wanted only came in at full price which was silly- over £200!!! I had had one from TKMaxx eons ago and I wore it summer and winter till it had holes in the elbows, and was pulling apart at the seams, so needed a replacement.

My Nana’s sister, my great auntie Doris apparently ran the Smedleys factory in Matlock, Derbyshire where the family came from, so there’s a family connection…

This amazing fabric has just been given to me by a friend who has been a wardrobe mistress for big west end productions before Covid. It’s a double layer of very fine baby cord and semi transparent polyester overseen with random stitching.
She now designs & makes ballet practice wrap skirts for ballerinas and all dancers in fact ! Have a look…
