We love when our students use the studio as a place to sing their hearts out, and hearing that they feel safe enough to do so is truly special 💜🎶

"Curriculum needs to be a practical working document that inspires teachers to feel they have the capabilities and skills to teach music that can be lifted from the page, and used easily in planning and practical music making ideas."

This quote came from a discussion with Ben Sellers when we were prepping for some Curriculum training we were delivering. Ben, on behalf of Leicester Music service, nottingham, leicester, lincoln, derbyshire - is working with a cohort of schools whose music lead is not a SEND specialist; a commonality in SEND schools.

When I said the above quote, Ben said to me, "say that, say what you just said". It was a great accolade for someone as established as Ben to draw on my knowledge in such a way.

The long and short of it is, curriculum should not be a tick box exercise, it should be a framework that can be used and utilised by teachers who are already working at maximum capacity and music probably isn't their specialism. Teachers are constantly spinning plates, and with such a focus on core subjects and demonstrating progress, they need a music curriculum that not only provides them with deliverable ideas, but inspires them to love teaching music. We want music to be a part of the week the teachers, support staff and learners look forward to, we want it to be creative, a release from the usual school day. Happy, creative staff = happy, engaged learners.
