We had great weather today for our practice Duke of Edinburgh walk up to Hengistbury Head! Students carried the backpacks they will be using for the upcoming Brownsea Island camping trip.

Survival at Approach! Our English unit this half term is survival. We have looked at all of the elements of story writing: how to hook the reader with a gripping start to a story; how to use a variety of sentence types for effect; building settings; developing interesting character profiles and using dialogue in a variety of ways. This week the students are planning and writing their survival stories. We can’t wait to read the finished results!

Students undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award are currently finalising their plans for the expedition at the end of the month. Students have assigned roles (timekeepers, map readers, motivators, equipment managers, food and meal managers, activities managers, photographers and lead walkers), planned activities (including map reading, diary keeping, a scavenger hunt and various games) and put together meal plans for the expedition.

The expedition encompasses a journey from school to Brownsea Island including an overnight stay, which includes a six-mile walk, travelling by train and boat, putting up tents, and planning and making three group meals. The expedition is an opportunity for students to step outside of familiar territory and demonstrate their abilities to work as a team, develop their independence and use their initiative. The expedition is very much a student led activity; with staff members Roz, George and Rudi present just to oversee the expedition and assess the students' performances .

A practice walk to Hengistbury Head will be undertaken by students ahead of the trip where students will be assigned their equipment, with the expedition taking place at the end of June.

Last week in our gardening club we planted bee friendly wild seeds in the garden across the road from our school. We hope to see seedlings in the next few weeks!
