2026 is the National Year of Reading! To celebrate we are sharing some Library staff recommendations!

Recommendation 7: Untouchable by Mulk Raj

One of our Research and Academic Support Librarians shares: "I have owned this book since my undergrad, when it was on a big reading list... and I didn't read it. Since moving and building my shelves, I have made a deal with myself to read every book on there that I haven't read yet.

Untouchable is very different fare from my usual reading, and I am definitely out of practice reading early 20th century English. I am not very familiar with the caste system beyond the very basics, and this book is quite eye opening in that regard. It's also interesting in the context of the experience of colonisation of course, and the complex relationship an outcast can develop with a foreign-to-them culture when their own culture seems inhospitable to them."

Recommendation 4: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

One of our Research and Academic Librarians shares: "This is the book I would take to my desert island. I have read it multiple times. It is a story of identity, moral conviction, redemption, forgiveness and love. The characters are strong and memorable set against the backdrop of revolutionary France accompanied by a plot that twists and turns. I also highly recommend the musical version (seen many times). I'm not that keen on the film. I've also visited Victor Hugo's homes in Normandy and Guernsey. I don't have the t-shirt 😊 I now need to read it again!"

Recommendation 3: The Glow by Jessie Gaynor

The Glow follows Jane Dorner, a public relations professional who struggles with her career and personal life. After a failed poetry program, she finds herself working in PR, feeling lost and disconnected. Seeking a new direction, she discovers FortPath, a wellness retreat run by Cass, who promises healing and self-improvement. Jane grapples with her identity and the pressures of the wellness industry, ultimately questioning the authenticity of her experiences and the commodification of wellness.
