An activity that encourages children to stop, think about, and discuss the effects of the vocabulary they see/use on a daily basis. By working in pairs to place the synonyms on the thermometer, they can clearly see that word choice is important when it comes to their own writing ✍️

When 'Beat the Teacher' gets competitive!
The aim was to identify as many features of a newspaper report as possible by reading an example report (based on 'Little Red Riding Hood'). If the children identified a feature that was written on the other side of my flashcards, they could steal the card from me and earn 5 points. If they found any extra features that I "hadn't spotted" they earned 10 points.
I think we can see who the clear winners were at the end of our game!
This was just one activity from last week's session that will set us up nicely for writing our own newspaper reports next time.

Does your 7–11 year-old need support in English? I am Laura, a fully qualified primary teacher with nine wonderful years’ classroom teaching experience and I have now set up my own English tuition company in Hampton – The Right Balance Tuition. I plan and teach reading, writing and grammar lessons for groups of approx. 1:4 for each year group (3-6) that are full of practical and engaging activities in which children can work with, support and learn from each other. I offer a free introductory meeting with parent and child to help me understand your needs and requirements further before we start.
