Just six days ago, the government's press release revealed their blueprint for an 'Every Child Can' programme: aiming to allow children across the country to access all kinds of enrichment activities.

The plan is to invest ยฃ132.5 million to fund activities in and out of school, ensuring this will be an entitlement for all.

This is an exciting proposal for all of us in education.

With the NEET crisis at an all time high, and it being a growing problem, plans like this show that the youth of today are being brought back to the centre of attention - exactly where they need to be in order to be guided back into society.

Every child should have an equal opportunity to access activities throughout their education, and hopefully, we will reach the stage where every child can๐Ÿค.

Happy National Thank a Teacher Day! โค๏ธ
To all the teachers we work with, thank you for being there for your students, and visibly showing up every day. Being in their corner does not go unnoticed, and although it isn't always easy, you are appreciated more than you know.

And to all teachers out there, this is your day, and we hope you get given all the credit you deserve ๐Ÿ™Œ.

In Gareth Southgate's recent documentary, he says that he struggled adjusting from going to school everyday to playing football full time, and that a lot of young men are struggling with these kinds of transition periods.

With year 6 transition days coming up, we know this transition for young girls and boys alike can be scary. Secondary school is a big step up in independence, the level of learning, and the amount of new people they are bound to meet.

In the spirit of this, we want to remind our network of the 3 most important things we should teach our children going into this brand new period:
โœฆ ๐๐ž ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐ง ๐Ÿง - try to go in with your mind as a blank slate. Just like how you were open to trying a new instrument/sport, take the same approach to thinking skills
โœฆ "๐ˆ ๐œ๐š๐ง" ๐Ÿ’ช - if you say you can do something, you'll want to do something, and then putting the effort in will lead you to your goals.
โœฆ ๐๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž, ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐Ÿ”๏ธ - you're not going to be able to do everything instantly, and that's okay! Just get back up and keep practising.

If Gareth Southgate struggled adjusting, it is okay that you might struggle too when entering your new school.

Our director, Sander de Groot, had the privilege of joining The Outward Bound Trust with MADE in a series of physical activities with fellow schools and students.

And if you know Sander, you know this is right up his street!

This week of whimsy comes at the end of students taking part in our VIPER programme. This is where we take proven and innovative thinking skills, coupled with advances in neuroscience, and put them into a 1:1 coaching programme in which students would learn how to think in an explicit and concrete manner.

And what a way to end such a successful period!

We look forward to continuing our partnership with all those involved, and we hope you appreciate these pics of the man himself in his element ๐Ÿ˜…!

NEET numbers are set to hit 1.25 million in the next 5 years.
That will change from 1 in 8 young people to 1 in 6.
According to the Young People and Work interim report, The Right Honourable Alan Milburn has said that these figures will become reality if we do not fix our system.

This report is meant to be taken forward in 2 phases: the ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ phase and the ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง phase.

We want to pose this solution question to you. Our network.

โœฆ What do YOU think the solution is to stop the number of NEETs increasing?
โœฆ From your experience, what are the main reasons for why young people are no longer able/willing to get involved?
โœฆ What can the government do proactively to see these figures drop?

Let's talk.

NEETs don't come from nowhere.
Their struggles with mental health often start from a young age.
That's why it is so important now to talk about having a growth mindset explicitly, especially at a young age, so that students are able to develop their thinking skills to counteract the challenges they are facing.

Carol Dweck, an American psychologist, says that your view of yourself determines everything. If operating through a fixed mindset, students believed all their abilities are fixed traits - that's that.

However, Dweck says that, with a growth mindset, they can be transformed. Not everyone can be a Nobel Peace prize Winner, but everyone can become smarter if they work at it.

Research by Stanford University says that having a growth mindset makes students more likely to challenge themselves, become stronger individuals, and more creative problem solvers.

As we are currently dealing with a crisis of young people not engaging with any form of education or training, it is time to teach growth mindsets explicitly so that we can start reversing this pattern.

Let's start thinking BIG ๐Ÿ‘Š.

1 in 8.
1 in 8 young people are not in education, employment or training - an increase of 70% over the last decade.

Following the government's recent report on Young People and Work, we were both shocked and saddened at these figures, and wanted to share what we think.

We are clearly at risk of losing generation, and this urgently needs to change.

A large proportion of young adults claiming they are NEET cite mental health as their primary condition, doubling to more than 4 in 10.

We want to make it clear: we don't blame you. Today, the cost of living combined with saturated job markets don't make it easy for this up and coming generation.

However, these limits are not definitive.

We want to talk about these issues, and to have your voices heard. It is important to share how you're feeling, as although it may sound trivial, simply talking about your struggles makes a huge difference. For example, a trusted friend may relate to how you feel, which allows them to express that back to you, and before you know it, a weight is lifted off both of your shoulders.

And mental health issues don't come from nowhere - these struggles start from a young age.

That is why school/college/sixth form is the perfect place to talk about these issues, especially with friends.Staying in school and going as much as possible gives you a familiar routine that you can trust. It also allows you to focus your attention on thinking and developing, as-well as spending time with people important to you.

As a NEET, you are part of the solution to this crisis, and vital to its turning around.

A problem shared is a problem halved, and by addressing these issues and bringing them to social media, we encourage people to get rid of the taboo nature surrounding these topics.

With this in mind, we can take one big step to getting this solved ๐Ÿ‘Š.

For our growth mindset, there is no 'yet'.
You can. That's it.

With it being the middle of exams for year 11s and year 13s, and also with the transition period coming up for year 6's, explicitly talking about being open to new thinking skills is more important than ever.

During exam season, nerves are at an all time high.
But this should not turn into thinking you're not able to do them.

Whilst nerves are high, your confidence should be too. If you're nervous, it shows that you care, and because you care, that means you have done the work to pass these exams. You can do this, and you know you can. Not 'yet', but right now ๐Ÿ‘Š .

For year 6's, secondary school is a huge jump.
But explicitly practising a growth mindset can provide you with a bridge to cross it.

Because COVID stripped some of the crucial thinking skills and learning abilities away from these children, they are in need of some extra guidance when taking this next step.

This is the perfect time to start talking to these students about approaching their new schools with an open mind. Just like learning a new sport, you walk in ready to learn, no matter how different it is from the things you already know.

And this doesn't happen 'yet'. This happens now.

You can do this ๐Ÿ‘Š.

We want to help you and your new year 7's.

Transitioning from primary school to a secondary school is a big deal, and with these new students having missed key learning habits thanks to COVID-19, it is more important than ever to make some things clear.

To our clients and friends, here are 3 Top Tips we have to ensure you can get your transition period to go as smoothly as possible:
1.๐Ÿง ๐๐ž ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐ง to new ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ - just like being ready to learn a new sport, you need to be open to learn new thinking skills.
2. ๐Ÿ’ช "๐ˆ ๐œ๐š๐ง" - if you say you can learn this, you will want to learn this, setting yourself up for success with a bit of effort.
3. ๐Ÿ“š Homework is about ๐ฉ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ - just like when you learned to ride a bike, its about the getting up again that gets you to your goal, not beating yourself up about not getting it the first time.
