Babies use all kinds of gestures and signs as a natural part of learning to talk. Encouraging your baby with extra signs like milk, more, change nappy or tired will help your baby communicate! Learning to sign together with Sing and Sign is easy because we make it fun to learn. Your baby will recognise important words sooner and can use signs to "talk" to you before speech!

One sign per sentence, or single keyword signing, is something we talk about a lot! The reality is very young children don’t need more and a single sign also generally meets them at their level.
In Babes, we talk about being consistent in what you call something like a milk feed but where even if a partner says something slightly differently, both using the milk sign alongside the language still helps a baby connect the two phrases as essentially meaning the same thing.
In Stage 1, we also talk about it in terms of being able to generalise the word that goes alongside the sign. We never sign in silence but as long as we are saying something relevant and in context alongside the sign, the exact phrase used can vary. So, for example, you might say hurt, pain, sore or ouch and a single sign can be used, connecting them all as meaning broadly the same.
It’s so simple but so beneficial to aid their understanding and learning!

Sorry to disappoint but this week’s Bounce & Rhyme session (5 June) has had to be cancelled by Beaconsfield Library due to a staff training day.
It wasn’t possible to reschedule, so the next session will now be on 19th June. Apologies for the gap as a result but have fun till then and see you soon still!

Whether it’s choosing their own instrument from the bucket, prop from the bag, or even their colour of scarf in Babes (yes, it’s possible!), all our courses have elements for our little ones to regularly practise their decision making skills!
It’s so important to let them do this, especially in a safe way where there is no right or wrong answer and where there is deliberately not too much choice that could overwhelm them.
In Stage 2 we also go a step further, introducing specific signs for things like different foods and colours to help with making their own choices too. It all helps their independence…because we all know how important it can be to have the orange not the pink plate, or the banana not the apple sometimes!!!
Give it a try…it takes as much practise for us as adults to not take over!

Excited to welcome in High Wycombe to the Sing and Sign family!
We will be working with the team on a weekly basis to teach keyword signing to both staff and children through the fun of weekly musical sessions.
Great to see that the children are already joining in enthusiastically and there are also lots of first signs for ‘more’ appearing too! 🩵

Follow our top tips to encourage this important pre verbal skill!
Pointing is such a specific gesture, as initially it helps show a child where and what to focus on, as well as providing visual references to go alongside language. Of course later they can also use it to show us what interests them and draw us into conversation.
This essential skill can be encouraged from just a few months old, so…
👉 Model it yourself - the more children see adults pointing, the quicker they will learn to use the skill themselves
👉 Respond when they point to give them language (& a sign!) to go alongside what is capturing their attention in the moment
👉 Before they are able to point, you can also follow their eye gaze to similarly learn what they are focused on at any one time
👉 Allow the subject of pointing (e.g. the object of interest) to become models for language, creating word associations which further aid memory and help them repeat the word later on (especially if also accompanied by a sign)
👉 Watch and wait, as children pointing generally means words aren’t far away!
Such a simple yet potentially overlooked skill, great for unlocking learning a whole range of vocabulary, so keep practising and signing and enjoy watching them develop!

What’s not to love about a song on a sunny day…and this is one of my favourite songs to sing and sign from our Stage 2 programme!
Singing is so good for little ones for many reasons: from hearing the rhymes within lyrics to being able to hear phonetic sounds differently when rhythms create alternative stresses within words compared to normal speech.
So sing along together and let’s hope it can also inspire a lovely sunny bank holiday to come…☀️
Remember too that our Monday classes will still be running as usual on 4 May 🩵
