Not every warning sign looks obvious at first.
That’s why I’m looking to run a summer self-defence workshop for girls moving from one school phase to the next. It’s planned to be a fun, supportive and age-appropriate space where girls can ask questions and learn practical skills that I wish I’d had growing up!
This isn’t just about physical safety. It’s about helping girls spot early warning signs in relationships, assert their boundaries, build confidence and feel better equipped to stay safe.
Because behaviour that first seems caring or affectionate can sometimes become controlling, pressurising or unhealthy — and young people deserve the tools to recognise that.
If this could be useful for your daughter, or a young person you support, please register your interest by completing this short form:
https://forms.gle/LZJL8jvqb4R7CYr99.
There’s no commitment at this stage — it just helps me understand whether there’s enough interest to plan the workshop and share more details.
Please feel free to share with anyone who might find this helpful.

Working with young girls from vulnerable backgrounds can be both challenging but incredibly rewarding.
Many of the young people we support have learned to put up a tough front, especially around adults they don’t yet trust. That can make delivering empowerment self-defence workshops more complex, but it also makes moments of connection even more meaningful.
Our after-school youth club sessions brought real challenges: sporadic attendance, young people who understandably wanted space to relax, and the need to adapt activities for different ages while still teaching essential skills in awareness, boundaries and personal safety.
That’s why it was so lovely to get this feedback the staff at Safe and Sound, a Derbyshire charity that provides practical and emotional support for children at risk of exploitation.
Every session is a chance to build trust, confidence and resilience — one conversation, one activity and one breakthrough at a time.

Violence thrives in silence. Connection creates protection.
One of the most powerful — and often overlooked — principles of empowerment self-defence is “Tell.”
Knowing who to tell, and trusting that you’ll be believed, supported, and never shamed, can make all the difference. It not only helps recovery after a traumatic experience, but can also shine a light on red-flag behaviour before it escalates.
When we share our stories, we realise we’re not alone. And when voices come together, they create strength, support, and change.
Recently, I adapted this principle for a group of 7–11-year-old girls. Using a fun, age-appropriate game and real-life scenarios, we explored who they could turn to if something didn’t feel right.
This is what teaching self-defence to young girls looks like: helping them recognise unhealthy behaviour, trust their instincts, and know that speaking up is a strength.

What does self-defence mean to you?
We believe it is more than physical technique — it’s confidence, boundaries and care that travel with you every day.
Our trauma-informed, evidence-based women's self-defence programmes in Leicestershire and the East Midlands blend situational awareness, verbal skills and physical drills so you leave feeling prepared and empowered beyond the training mat.

✨ “We are powerful.” ✨ Sometimes we just need a little reminder of the strength, resilience, and power we already carry.
Last week I had the pleasure of supporting my friend and fellow empowerment self defence instructor Maya .space at her workshop at The Bridge in London.
It’s always a joy to work alongside Maya — she has this calm, steady strength that instantly helps people feel comfortable. I always leave her sessions having learned something new or with a fresh idea sparked!
And sadly we didn’t manage to grab a photo of us in her very cool T shirts… so you’ll just have to picture it 😄💪

Are these just messy squiggles, or could they be your first self-defence lesson? This drawing came from a lively session with girls aged 9–10, as we explored which parts of the body are vulnerable and which are strong enough to use in self-defence. It's all about empowering young girls to protect themselves with confidence!
