Is it Euro 2024 all over again? ⚽🤖
Researchers at the University of Liverpool have used machine learning and a state-of-the-art forecasting model to predict the outcome of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
After running 1,000 tournament simulations and factoring in everything from player quality and team dynamics to injuries, suspensions, weather and altitude, the model predicts:
🏆 Spain to win the World Cup (26.1% probability)
🥈 England to finish as runners-up (17% probability of winning)
🌟 Norway to emerge as the tournament's dark horse
⚽ Erling Haaland and Mikel Oyarzabal to battle it out for the Golden Boot
The research comes from Dr Benjamin Holmes and Professor Ian McHale in the Centre for Sports Business at the University of Liverpool Management School, who have expanded their forecasting model since Euro 2024 – where it correctly predicted England would finish second.
While no model can predict the future with certainty, combining advanced analytics with thousands of simulations helps researchers better understand the probabilities behind one of the world's most unpredictable sporting events.
