The Department of Education has released a consultation on their proposals for major changes to how DSA funds assistive software for Deaf and disabled students in higher education. They are suggesting that paid assistive software will only be available for fewer students in “exceptional circumstances” but this could have dire impacts on Deaf students who depend on assistive software as an alternative when in-person support is unavailable.

The consultation is open until Thursday 18th June so do take action and help us ensure your voice is included in the responses!
We will be offering online forums to discuss this and provide opportunities for students to respond in BSL if preferred. Keep an eye out on our page for information on this!

We were honoured to participate in the first ever BDA Youth Conference at DeafEXPO on Saturday!
Three of our committee members represented our team in a panel discussion with MCs Erin and Jeffrey on the topic ‘Deaf Students in Education: Access, DSA, and Student Union Advocacy’.

We appreciate this opportunity to share our lived experiences and highlight the main challenges posed by a lack of Deaf awareness across universities and the systems designed without proper consideration for Deaf students.
A huge thank you to & for making this happen!

For Deaf Awareness Week, we asked some of our team members what their recommendations would be for how people within universities could ensure they are more inclusive and accessible for Deaf students.
Do you have any of your own suggestions too? Share them below!

Happy Deaf Awareness Week 2026 from the UK Deaf Students’ Union!

Join us in celebrating Deaf culture and community while also raising awareness on the various barriers faced everyday by Deaf people. This year’s theme is ‘Right to understand - Together, we break barriers.’

Deaf students in university have a right to access higher education opportunities just like their hearing peers, but the support available is not always consistent.
There is so much more that universities, DSA and the government could be doing to ensure that Deaf students are able to be independent and receive the same standard of education. We appreciate all your support in helping us strive to make a difference for Deaf students, and hope that changes for the better are in the horizon!

Over the week, we’ll be sharing posts related to this theme, so do keep an eye out for those!
