For years, fears about the impact of tidal energy on marine life have held back one of the UK’s most reliable renewable energy sources. But new research led by Imperial College London shows the story is more balanced than many assume.
The team found that modern tidal power projects often have neutral or even positive effects on ecosystems. In some cases, tidal barrages have created new habitats, improved water quality, and supported thriving wildlife.
Beyond clean energy, tidal infrastructure can also help protect coasts from rising seas, making it a powerful tool for both climate action and biodiversity.
With careful design and planning, tidal energy could help the UK meet up to 20% of its electricity demand while supporting nature and protecting communities.

🌍 Imperial College London leads the world in IPCC climate experts!
11 Imperial researchers will help compile the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report (AR7), shaping global climate policy for the 2030s.
Among them, Centre for Environmental Policy experts Joeri Rogelj, Friederike Otto, Robin Lamboll, and Jarmo Kikstra will contribute their knowledge on climate science, future temperature scenarios, and extreme weather events.
The IPCC reports are a vital source of evidence on climate change, its impacts and the urgent actions we need to take. Imperial’s team highlights the College’s expertise across science, engineering, finance and public health, working together for a decarbonised, resilient future.

🌍 “Science must be placed at the heart of everything we do.”
That was the opening message at Countdown to , an event hosted by the Grantham Institute and the Delegation of the EU to the UK, marking a pivotal moment between COP29 and COP30.
Dr Friederike Otto reminded us that “no part of the world is safe” from the impacts of climate change, while Professor Joeri Rogelj made a compelling case that the 1.5°C target is “stronger than ever,” not just as a scientific benchmark, but as a legal and ethical imperative.
Speakers from science, diplomacy, business, and civil society called for courage, collaboration, and clear action. From tackling misinformation to boosting implementation, the message was clear: the road to Belém must be bold, inclusive, and guided by evidence.

🌱 Congratulations to Ben Roberts, PhD student at the Centre for Environmental Policy, on winning the prestigious Sir Michael Uren Prize! 🏆
Ben’s innovative research is transforming how we think about sustainable food systems. His project uses insect farming to convert palm plantation waste, a major environmental pollutant, into high-protein animal feed. This circular approach reduces pollution, saves resources, and offers scalable solutions to food insecurity and climate stress. 🐛🌾🌍
The £20,000 prize will support Ben as he expands his fieldwork and builds partnerships with NGOs, policymakers, and communities around the world.
We’re proud to see CEP research making such a powerful real-world impact, congratulations again, Ben! 👏
