On Friday 30 January, our politics students welcomed local MP for Kensington and Bayswater, Joe Powell, to Collingham for a lively and wide-ranging discussion on democratic participation and public life.

Joe spoke openly with students and encouraged challenge and debate, taking on questions around voting, social media, student finance and housing, and exploring how these issues play out in practice.

Students didn’t shy away from difficult topics — from the enforceability of social media restrictions to why young people’s participation in elections matters if their priorities are to be heard.

At Collingham, politics is more than political theory. Students are encouraged to question, challenge, and connect their learning to the real world they are stepping into and we are grateful for the time Joe took to engage with our students, demonstrating a clear commitment to local issues and to listening thoughtfully to younger voices within his constituency.

As the new year begins, we celebrate an incredible milestone: 50 years of championing our students and guiding thousands of young people toward their ambitions. We kick off 2026 honoured by our history and excited for the future.
