Let’s create a character and ‘Role That Dice’ in a world of adventure together!

Black Box Drama’s ‘Role That Dice’ system, is inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, often referred to as D&D, a popular roleplaying game that has been around for decades. It is one of the most widely played tabletop games in the world.

At the core of Dungeons and Dragons is storytelling. Players create and take on the roles of characters who then adventure together in different worlds.

Led by their Dungeon Master, the players use their collective imaginations to navigate the worlds and create stories, guiding their characters through quests for treasures, mysterious encounters, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and much more.

D&D can be set in any world. Everything is your decision, from what you look like, to how you act, to what happens next. Anything else is left to the dice to decide.

Black Box Drama’s ‘Role That Dice’ system draws inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons, or D&D, a beloved roleplaying game enjoyed by millions for decades.

At the core of Dungeons & Dragons is storytelling. Players create and embody characters who embark on adventures in fantastical worlds, led by their Dungeon Master. Together, they use their imaginations to navigate these worlds, crafting stories filled with quests for treasure, mysterious encounters, daring rescues, courtly intrigue, and more.

D&D’s flexibility allows it to be set in any world, giving players the freedom to decide everything from their character’s appearance and actions to the unfolding of events. When fate hangs in the balance, the dice make the final call.

For nearly two decades Niyazi Unugur, Director of Black Box Drama, taught in a number of different schools and settings. His experiences helped him to form the unique Role That Dice system.
In his early years, after training at Goldsmiths University, practising the ‘Mantle of the Expert’ method, he quickly realised the engaging nature that improvised drama had on his pupils.
As his pedagogy developed, he began studying immersive theatre styles and attending various masterclasses such as the Punchdrunk Theatre group, adding these principles to his methods of teaching.
Finally, through playing Dungeons and Dragons, and other tabletop role-play games, the mechanic of dice rolling was added to enhance the improvised creative process even further.
Together, these three elements combined create the Role That Dice system.
