Could breakthrough research at King’s College London improve cancer treatment designs?

A new analytical method allows scientists to track exactly where inside a living cell a drug accumulates. This is the first time that this has been possible.

This research could improve treatment effectiveness. It also has potential beyond cancer for tackling other infectious diseases and conditions.

Professor Ajay Aggarwal from our Institute of Cancer Policy is leading global research into an artificial intelligence tool that plans the delivery of life-saving radiotherapy for cervical and prostate cancer.

At the moment, 94% of cervical cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Radiotherapy is the main treatment. But only 10% of people who need it in low-income countries receive it – compared with 40% in middle-income nations.

This is largely due to a shortage of skilled professionals. The Radiotherapy Planning Assistant, an AI-driven technology developed by the MD Anderson Cancer Centre, could alleviate this issue by accelerating the production of high-quality radiotherapy plans.

Congratulations to King’s College London alum Tushar Kumar (Politics, 2024), who has been elected Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood.

At just 23, he is the youngest Indian-origin Mayor in the UK.

‘King’s played a hugely important role in my journey into public service and leadership,’ says Tushar. ‘I remain grateful for the experiences and opportunities I had during my time there.’
