โš“ Geopolitical maritime risks and security threats to seafarers - Protecting seafarers in a volatile world.

๐ŸŒŠ Recent events have shown that the maritime domain is vulnerable to many known and emerging threats, placing shipping operations and crews under intense stress and strain. Understanding these risks and how they can manifest and combine is the first step to developing methods and tools to counter them; and to building a future industry capable of sustaining and mitigating them in the longer term.

๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ For its biennial conference on June 30, The Nautical Institute London Branch has brought together an excellent set of experts to explore these themes and exchange views on what needs to change for the future safety and security of the global shipping community.

๐ŸŒ Keynote speaker: Mr Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization
Technical sessions chair: Mr Walter Vervloesem FNI, President of The Nautical Institute

๐Ÿšข Cadet Training berth availability was front and centre at the International Maritime Organization - IMO last week.

โš“ The IMOโ€™s Technical Cooperation Committee received some positive reports regarding the Global Onboard Training Programme (GBOT) run by Korea, as well as the NextWave cadet training programme set up by Saudi Arabia and implemented through their Bahri national shipping line.

๐ŸŒ The NextWave Seafarers Project provides 20 cadets from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) with one year of onboard training through Bahri Shipping Line, one of Saudi Arabiaโ€™s leading maritime companies.

๐Ÿšข Since its inception in 2021, GBOT has successfully trained 204 cadets from 28 IMO member States across six regions. Keeping it at the forefront of training, GBOT is being restructured to include decarbonisation and digitalisation.

๐ŸŒ After The Nautical Institute addressed the Committee to advocate for all flag Administrations to maximise their financial and administrative incentives for every ship to carry a sensible number of cadets on every voyage, the IMO secretariat noted to the Committee that they are aware of other cadet berth initiatives and that they will try to coordinate linkages between them.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If you have any experiences or advice regarding cadet training berth availability โ€“ positive or negative โ€“ please comment below. Your thoughts will be used to inform our Instituteโ€™s future advocacy on this important subject.

๐ŸŒ Earlier in June, The Institut des hautes รฉtudes de dรฉfense nationale (IHEDN) (Institute for Higher National Defence Studies) visited The Nautical Institute for a series of briefing on the work of he International Maritime Organization.

โš“ Under the guidance of Vice Admiral Jean Hausermann, and Prefect Nicolas Basselier, fifty members of this yearโ€™s course received briefings from the French Ambassador to the IMO, Her Excellency Marine de Carnรฉ-Trรฉcesson and Captain Chris O'Flaherty AFNI. These highlighted the vital work of flag State Delegations in deciding maritime regulation, and the expert influence of non-Governmental organisations such as The Nautical Institute.

๐Ÿšข We were also delighted that the Chair of our French Branch, Captain Nicolas Millot, was able to join us in between his seagoing role as Master of a pipelaying vessel. He discussed our Instituteโ€™s work in France to build seafarer networking opportunities, share best practice, and also their organisation of a forthcoming conference on the work of Designated Persons Ashore in France, and the ISM Code.

โš“ This visit by IHEDN was part of a wider programme which included presentations at Lloydโ€™s of London by Nigel Carter, Neil Roberts and Peter Aylott.
