Yesterday our son Stanley was playing his end of term jazz concert at Saturday school in Hackney, who should rock up but Wynton Marsalis.
So Stan had to play 3 complex jazz pieces and take extended solos in front of basically the greatest living jazz trumpeter, band leader and educator. That takes some courage!
Stan was too shy to talk to Wynton for a bit but eventually he did, and Wynton was the humblest, nicest person you could ever meet. So full of encouragement and useful tips.
Then when we left the school to go home, who was on the platform at Haggerston - only Wynton Marsalis. Man he is is so down to earth, he even thanked us as parents for being there for Stanley. The rest of the evening Stanley, Ai and me were beaming ear to ear. A mind blowing and inspirational encounter for Stanley and for us as his parents.

World Heart Beat Music Academy and The Julian Joseph Jazz Academy Present 'Together We Go Forward' ✨
The 606 Club has always looked to the future generations of musicians and as part of that philosophy has good working relationships with a number of Schools and Academies. This afternoon we are very pleased to welcome two institutions particularly close to the 606 Club, World Heart Beat Music Academy and the Julian Joseph Academy who will be jointly presenting their programme “Together We Go Forward”. This is how they describe what they do and what to expect from the show:
World Heart Beat Music Academy and the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy are long-standing partners; the partnering of both academies helps secure the shared enrichment and creation of more well-rounded young musicians who benefit through learning, gaining industry experience and performance opportunities.
Both academies highlight music’s role in encouraging dialogue, combating discrimination and promoting human dignity.
World Heart Beat students are exposed to specialist jazz programmes at Julian Joseph Jazz Academy, whilst Julian Joseph Jazz Academy students are given opportunity at World Heart Beat to expand their experience in classical music, orchestra and band performances and their new venue in Nine Elms, as well as mentoring opportunities. World Heart Beat’s jazz programme is spearheaded by the exemplary work of internationally renowned British jazz musicians, including Trevor Watkis, Tony Kofi ani Byron Wallen - all of whom are also part of the founding faculty of Julian Joseph Jazz Academy.
Expect a wonderful mix of standards and jazz standards, and performances featuring many of the talented young students from the two academies - previous alumni of both have gone on to win Jazz FM Awards, Berklee scholarships, and the BBC Young Jazz Musician of The Year, plus many more awards. If you want to be the first catch the next generation of jazz musicians, this is most definitely the gig for you!
