On Thursday 20 March, The Atlantic broke the story of how Meta has used the Library Genesis (LIbGen) dataset, which is full of pirated material (including our textbooks), to develop their AI systems.

A recent government consultation into Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Copyright and the campaign sees the UK creative industries fighting back against the proposed changes to copyright law, which would favour multinational tech companies, but irremediably damage the creative industries.

It isn't often the three of us can get together, but one of those rare moments happened last month when Tom was presented with his Honorary Fellowship of the IMI at the Sytner Elite Technician Competition. Henry (Gray and Hayley's son in the picture) has grown up with Tom on the computer screen in the kitchen of his home whilst the previous books have come together. He has helpfully explained to his school teachers that Tom is "mummy's boyfriend from the internet".

Hayley Pells, one of Tom's team, who has been working on the textbooks for the last three books. She works for the Institute of the Motor Industry, but prior to that she had her own workshop in South Wales which specialized in wheel alignment, but also had an MOT lane. It was here she met her husband Gray as he came in for an MOT one day and let slip he could MIG, TIG, and Gas weld. As skilled people are hard to find, she married him. They've been working together ever since, but have always maintained that a workshop each was the secret to a happy marriage. Hayley is a Level 4 EV Technician, MOT tester, and holds a Masters in Science, she is a Fellow of the IMI and holds the CAE and Techsafe additional recognition.

Grahame Pells, new to the Automotive Technology team, is a Fellow of the IMI and also holds AAE and Techsafe recognition. Working in the automotive industry for coming up to 20 years, Gray started as a welder, progressing to sheet metal fabrication (with a bend for aluminum, ph'nar ph'nar). Gray is an EV Technician qualified to Level 4, and is an MOT tester. He has his own shop, GP Fabrications, working on one off pieces for automotive, aviation, and occasionally prototyping. He has been writing professionally for 18 months and is currently completing a Masters in Engineering. Gray's education experience centers in regularly contributing to the National Occupational Standards and previously volunteering to teach in workshops encouraging GCSE students to consider roles in the Motor Industry.

A welcome addition to the team as he is strong in electronics and reverse engineering. In his spare time Gray is a drummer and has a collection of old cars and bikes he likes to tinker with. Married to Hayley Pells, they have 2 small children and live in Wales.

🎉 We're excited to share that Tom Denton, the driving force behind our community, is expanding his team!

📚 Hayley has been writing with Tom for a few years now and Grahame Pells, carefully selected by Tom for his passion and expertise in automotive engineering, will also be joining the team.

Tom is stepping back from full time work after 45 years and many published textbooks, he is looking forward to focusing on his music and especially his band.

Hayley here (part of Tom's team) - really proud to see Tom inducted into a very special group by Steve Nash, CEO of the IMI and Melvin Rogers, Director of Human Resources for Sytner. Tom has received the Honorary Fellowship of the Institute of the Motor Industry, the highest accolade that can be bestowed, recognising his lifetime's work supporting the sector. Its presentation at the Sytner Elite Technician Competition in Stoneleigh Park, surrounded by the latest and some of the best in automotive technology is very apt for this prestigious award.
