Published in Open Heart, this randomised controlled trial adds evidence that when you exercise may matter.
Chronotype - your body’s natural preference for activity timing (morning or evening) - is shaped by circadian rhythms that influence metabolism, hormones, and energy levels.
In this trial, middle-aged adults at increased cardiovascular risk followed exercise programmes either aligned or misaligned with their chronotype over 12 weeks.
While exercise improved outcomes overall, aligning timing with chronotype was associated with greater benefits, including improvements in blood pressure, glucose, lipid profiles, fitness, and sleep. Adherence was also higher.
These findings suggest that personalising when people exercise - alongside what they do - may support better cardiometabolic health and longer-term engagement.

Unnecessary tests and treatments not only drain resources but also expose patients to avoidable risk.
Clinical Decision Support (CDS) is vital for high-value care. By flagging procedures with limited evidence of benefit, CDS helps clinicians avoid low-value interventions and overtreatment. The result? Significant cost savings and improved patient safety. It’s about delivering better care by doing less of what doesn't work.
