🙌 We were delighted Adam Wagner K.C. delivered the keynote lecture at our PhD Forum.
⚖️ Wagner is a barrister at leading human rights set, Doughty Street Chambers, and one of our Visiting Professors. He has acted in some of the key public law and human rights cases of recent years, including: leading cases on the right to protest and human rights during the Covid-19 pandemic.
🗣️ In 'Between a Rock and a Dark Place - Lessons from a public inquiry on preventing abuses of power and protecting the rule of law', Wagner discussed the extraordinary events unearthed by Sir Peter Openshaw’s public inquiry, and the lessons the scandal may have for protecting modern societies from abuses of power.

🌍 The Meta Oversight Board was established to improve how Meta treats its Instagram and Facebook users worldwide. Five years on, it has emerged as a distinctive experiment in global platform governance - shaping content moderation decisions that affect billions.
💭 Our recent international symposium brought together leading scholars and practitioners to explore the extent to which the Board is functioning as a global standard-setter.
🗣️ Reflecting on the event, co‑organiser Jed Odermatt shared: “The Meta Oversight Board is sometimes treated as a niche concern for tech or free speech lawyers. Yet our discussions ranged from international criminal law and human rights to feminist legal theory and the sociology of adjudication, underscoring its significance across a wide range of legal domains.”
📱The event also featured a keynote address by Prof Paolo Carrozza, Co-Chair of the Meta Oversight Board, on the role of independent oversight and international human rights law in setting standards for online expression.
