SOAS JSoc ran a week recognising the 'Forgotten Refugees of the Middle East'.

This week we celebrated Jewish culture, stories and heritage from all over the Middle East, with three fascinating and diverse speakers.

On Tuesday, we welcomed Hen Mazzig, an Israeli public speaker, writer and activist, who shared his personal story and the story of 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries and their journeys to Israel.

On Wednesday, we welcomed Carol Isaacs, creative mind behind The Wolf Of Baghdad. She shared some of her family's powerful memoirs of Iraq, and of her experience looking into the untold story of Iraqi Jews for the project.

On Thursday, we welcomed Lyn Julius, co-founder of Harif, the UK Association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa. She spoke about her new book, 'Uprooted', in which she investigates the tragedy of how 3000 years of Jewish civilisation in the Middle East could vanish over the course of a few decades.

SOAS JSoc are proud to have run this week of activities, especially on a campus on which it hasn't always been easy for Jews to talk about their identity. We are grateful to everyone who came to listen and engage.

Thank you to our sponsors UJS - Union of Jewish Students and to our fantastic speakers!

SOAS Jewish Society stands in solidarity with QM Jsoc. It is absolutely unacceptable for a student officer on the chair of the Queen Mary Student's Union to be expressing antisemitism of any form.
