With the UK moving towards a social media ban for under-16s, many parents are asking the same question:
“Why is it so hard to get my child off their screen?”
The answer is often more complicated than “they just need more self-control.”
Many apps, games and platforms are designed to capture attention, deliver rapid rewards and keep the brain coming back for more. When a child is stressed, bored, lonely, overwhelmed or simply looking for a quick boost, screens can become the fastest way to change how they feel.
Over time, some children can find themselves caught in a cycle where switching off feels genuinely difficult. What looks like defiance, arguing or “addiction” is often a developing brain struggling to step away from something that provides instant stimulation and relief.
Understanding the cycle helps us move away from blame and towards better conversations, healthier boundaries and practical support.
I’ve created a FREE download called Curious Conversations: The Screen-Dopamine Cycle to help parents and educators structure those often difficult conversations about screen time in a calm, curious and non-confrontational way.
To receive your free copy, see instructions in the visual.

Last week, some of our Y6 pupils attended a Barclays LifeSkills financial education session at East Ham Library.
The workshop helped them develop money management skills through fun, practical activities linked to PSHE and numeracy.
Barclays will be visiting school soon to talk to the other Y6s.
