Teacher Training: Basic Phonics for Children
1. General Principles
2. Vowels
3. Consonants
4. Consonant blends
5. Consonant digraphs – two letters one sound
6. Digraphs – one different sound
7. Vowel digraphs – two letters one sound
8. When not to ‘sound out’ difficult blends and difficult words

1. General Principles
Having made the decision to teach phonic sounds to a person of any age, but particularly to young children, it’s important to establish that the child/person can understand the reason for copying, what seems to them like, strange noises. It’s tempting to capture their concentration with songs and rhymes – all of which play their part – but when too much emphasis is put onto ‘fun’ children, in particular, mimick the sounds and find it difficult to recognise and use them when it comes to main object of reading.
a) Differentiate the upper-case and lower-case letters by saying:
b) These letters all have names: ABC etc
c) These letters have sounds: abc etc (just a few to demonstrate)
d) Demonstrate different sounds like a drum, a bell, clapping, whispering etc; the aim being to encourage the child to listen and to become aware of what they are saying and of what they are hearing.
e) Enlarge one of the RTL English story pages and ask the children to look at it. Point out the different letters and explain that by learning the sounds they will be able to read most of the words.
f) It’s confusing for both children and parents to learn, usually very early on their road to reading, that they can’t ‘sound out’ most numbers and colour words (usually the first books bought by parents). Memory recognition of whole words goes hand in hand with phonic practice.

We've had some questions recently about teaching phonics. So, we're going to post some information above about the basic principles and then add more information to our private facebook group.

I want to tell you a little about the RTL English curriculum. It has been taught more than 1 million times and supports learning in schools worldwide. It provides 15 years of learning for children aged 3 to 18 years old and teaches all the communicative functions and language forms students need to have a richer, more successful educational experience.

The curriculum offers a complete year of teaching materials for every grade level and student year group between Kindergarten and College. It's been developed and refined over 21 years and its objectives have been logically clustered into a 15-year sequence of 600 lessons. These lessons scaffold and build the instruction of each subsequent lesson upon the learning of earlier lessons.

Depending on student age, instruction typically consists of a variety of activities including speaking, phonics, reading, comprehension, creative writing, grammar and critical thinking. The content of each lesson is determined by an 8-page student workbook that's slightly more challenging than the last in the sequence. As a result, students advance in small, manageable steps and acquire English language skills that enable them to achieve better results in school, exams & beyond.
